electric problems

2000-09-20 by DEMIERRE Alexandre

Hello,

I own a used Emax since 1995, but I don't know which version it is. It
is written Emax HD SE on it, and I suppose it is an Emax II.
Actually, this is not the problem. Since last year, I don't use it
anymore, because I have problems with the power supply. When I switch it
on, it works for a while, and then it crashes and reboots without any
reasons, as if there had been a short electric cut.
Has anyone already had that problem? If yes, is it possible to fix it?
Thanks

I know I'v heard in the past that people have replaced their power
supplies without ordering a new one from E-mu, but I don't seem to
have the message archived anywhere. Try calling E-mu and see if you
can get any information out of them as to the specifications of the
power supply.

FYI - if your Emax is grey and says Emax HD SE then you have a late
model Emax 1 not an Emax II. The Emax II is black and doesn't say
HD SE on it.

If it were an Emax II, it would say so on the labeling. Plus, it would be
black instead of grayish-blue. I think you have an Emax (I).

Power supplies in Emaxes can and do go bad. Sounds like yours has gone. It
is difficult to repair the power supplies themselves, so usually they are
just replaced. You should contact a local Service Center, or if you think
you can do the work yourself, order a new supply and install it yourself.
(But be careful!)

I just remembered that the symptoms you are describing are not necessarily
caused by a bad power supply. I remember that yes, sometimes the system can
crash, and you might here a 'clicking' sound made by a bad supply. Or even
more obvious, the system won't boot at all, and the LCD will not light. But
intermittent crashes were sometimes caused by CPU chips or timer chips (?)
that had corroded pins that deteriorate over time. (The two chips I am
referring to are relatively large gray ceramic chips with gold pins).
Sometimes pulling the chips out and cleaning the pins (with an electrical
contact cleaner and abrasive like a pencil eraser) can sometimes fix it.
Again, this may be best done by a qualified technician. The pins are easy to
bend and break!
