Converting Emax I disks to Emax II disks

Converting Emax I disks to Emax II disks

2014-12-31 by julioho_53077@...

Hi,

I just bought an Emax II without any disks and I was wondering if I could convert some of my Emax I disks to Emax II. I would guess this not to be a difficult task, yet I couldn't find the command on the Omniflop program and when trying to check the OS on the Emax I disks it said it didn't have a valid OS on them... By the way, tried playing the disks afterwards on the Emax I and it gave me a disk error message.

Thanks for any help you can provide.

Hey there,

Try the program "EMXP", it should be able to do this. You'll need a
windows PC with a floppy drive (if that is what your discs are). The
program is free.

Cheers, and happy new year!

Re: [emax] Converting Emax I disks to Emax II disks

If you have booted the Emax 2 from Hard disk, then you can just insert an Emax 1 disk and load the bank and it will work. (i've done this)

If you are booting off floppy, then you have to have a valid Emax 2 OS on the disk....so that would give you software errors as it needs to load OS modules from disk....

If you save the Emax I bank onto PC with EMXP, and have an Emax 2 formatted floppy, then you could write the Emax 1 bank to the Emax 2 OS floppy and it should work.

Hi folks,

Tried using the EMXP software and couldn't find the Emax II OS or any other OS. Where would I find it? I've used the EMXP to write some of the Alan Wilder samples on disks that I bought but when trying to copy or save a backup on other Emax I disks the sampler gave me a disk error again. I'm really struggling on understanding how the EMXP program works.

Any insight will be highly appreciated on both issues.

You have to write an OS and a bank to the disk.
EMXP doesn't include the OS in the download.
You have to download and put OS image in the OS or image folder inside EMXP.

EMX version file of Emax 2.14 OS is in the files section of the group.
login to yahoo group to get it.

Try referencing the EMXP manual.
OS layers for Emax II should be emxp site or in the files section of this group.

Once converted / extracted it would be cool if you could upload some Alan Wilder Banks in Emax 1 format.

Thanks,

Ok, so I'm making some progress. I was able to download the OS for Emax I and Emax II. I figured I needed to do a run test with the Emax I so I wrote the Emax I OS into a disk and then put an image of the Alan Wilder samples and when inserting the disk into the Emax I keyboard it didn't say Disk Error! rather it gave me an Data CRC Error message, what the hell is this and what does it mean?

Now, in regards to the Emax II config. I put the Emax II 2.14 OS on the disk and tried putting a EM1. file on the same disk hoping that it could read it... No luck there... My Emax II didn't read it and it went directly to the hard drive. Am I doing something wrong? I apologize for the inconvenience but I turn to you as I know you are a guru on Emax.

Thanks

You are using DSDD floppy disks and NOT 3.5 inch HD disks, correct?

Because this is a common error message when using the wrong disks…

Hey Ted,

Emax 1 Question about slim floppy drive and FD media type.
Can you successfully use a 3.5" HD disk with the slim floppy drives?

I know the stock Emax 1 FDD prefers DSDD.

Thanks for your help,

Re: [emax] Re: Converting Emax I disks to Emax II disks

2015-01-03 by Ted Summers

An HD disk is detected as 1.44MB by the drive hardware due to the slot on the disk.
Emax can only use a 700KB disk size. - so without covering the slot, Emax sees it as invalid media.

With that said- the slim floppy is more likely to work with an HD disk where the hole is covered (making it seen as a 700k) then an HD disk would with a stock Emax drive.
But over time it can still be a problem using the wrong disks with the hole covered.
I've seen this in practice where I had used HD disks with the hole covered….after a couple of months started getting CRC errors.

There's still a magnetic field strength mismatch…..

The best answer is still to get actual DSDD disks, which can be purchased on the web- they are still made as whole industries (for example sewing/ embroidery machines) use disks for the programming….

Ted,

So do I need then to buy the DSDD 3.5" floppy disk to use on the Emax II? Also, I got the images of the Alan Wilder samples and some of them are over 8MB, how can I get them to play on my Emax II if it is a 2MB HD? It seems I'm screwed, huh?

Thanks for all your help!!!

Re: [emax] Re: Converting Emax I disks to Emax II disks

Yes, all floppy disks used by Emax 1 and 2 are DSDD.

It's possible you could upload the banks to Andre's drop box and someone with 8M machine could redo them to the 2MB size….

Does your Emax 2 have the memory expansion board? (it's a stacked board that sits on top of the main logic.
If so, it might be possible to increase the ram in the Emax 2 by added RAM chips and use the Scrambled megs procedure (file in files section).

Move to quarantaine

This moves the raw source file on disk only. The archive index is not changed automatically, so you still need to run a manual refresh afterward.
