looking for SCSI KIt

2014-06-03 by turkanaman2@...

new to emax forum, just bought an Emax SE version 2 rev. C from Ebay. I'm learning the OS and having lots of fun but my floppy is becoming unreliable, sometimes it reads/writes fine, sometimes I get errors. Anybody have a spare SCSI kit for sale? thanks!

buying the kit is simple finding someone that can install it is a different question.

any one in europe fit these kits?

if so much is the going rate?

Re: [emax] Re: looking for SCSI KIt

If you print out the upgrade instructions and take the kit to any decent electronics repair shop, they should be able to do it for you.
It takes me about 35 minutes to complete the modifications to the board, and another 10 minutes or so to test it out and verify it's working. So figure labor would likely be 1 hour - 1.5 hours at the shop rate.

I expect you would probably have to take a SCSI drive with you so they could test it.... or if your local university has electronics courses, you might find a student that would be interested to do it for you as a project, since they gain practical experience...

Ted again thanks :-)
I know a friend who could do this for me in Paris.
But where can i buy this kit? Also that scsi that is not recognised either internal or external HD/CD what could this be?
Can this be fixed as well with a simple chip replacement/resistor soldering/removal ?
Dear emax friends, are some of you ok to sell one of those kits to me?
By the way any chances that one of you could sell me an expansion board? ;-)

if your emax is a later stereo motherboard then you dont need a expansion as you have all the ram slots you just need the ram ic's and prehaps the unlock code.

Re: looking for SCSI KIt

2014-06-07 by sweetsynthchuck@...

look for rows of empty ram ic sockets

tkae a picture of your motherboard and post back

Re: [emax] Re: looking for SCSI KIt

2014-06-07 by sweetsynthchuck@...

looks like you can fit another 4mb, 8slots = 1mb

so if you have 2 already installed you should be able to make it 6mb

Re: [emax] Re: looking for SCSI KIt

Sorry, but I don't think that's how it works.
If there is someone with more expertise, please correct me….but this is my understanding

An Emax 2 either has 1 MB or 2MB on the main board.
Where 1 MB you use one set of addressable RAM chips, for 2MB you use the other set (not populated in this case - I believe this board has 1MB and can be checked using "Free Memory" menu option).

You have to have the correct support chips in addition to properly address the specific set of chips in use.

Unless you have the correct PALs, then you cannot just put in more chips to make 2MB.
If you have the correct PALs, you could make it 2MB with the correct chips populating the empty spaces- but it holds 2MB and no more on the main board.

In addition, when you add the RAM expansion board, a 1MB on the main board maxes at 7MB (again with the correct PAL chips and enable code), 2MB can get the 8MB.

This is enabled or prevented by the installed PAL (locking) chip set and the unlock code / update disk that installs the code (one use disk) to update parameters in the eeeprom.

More about the correct PAL combinations and memory chip locations is in the memory upgrade guide for the expansion board (available on the web).

Please note - you can't just "copy" PALs- they are fused to prevent reading out the locking algorithm.

There have been efforts to break PALs by the Arcade Emulation teams even by making special cracking boards and software modules.
PAL "L" series have been broken, and can be read out.

Last word was that PALs that are "R" (R = registered PAL16R4ACN) like Emax uses are STILL not broken, to this day.

The only reason I have the Emax 1 SCSI TIM PAL (which allows the SCSI enable features), is I was given the original factory binary by Rob at Emulator Archvie.
It was proprietary format and did not work "as is"…. I had to research and work through process to get it converted to a format for use with my programmer.

Please note that programming a PAL requires an expensive programmer.
A $25 or even $200 IC / EPROM programmer won't program them. You need a DATAMAN 48 ($1200) or similar to program them. The cheapest programmer I have seen that *MAY* program them is $800…

While that may not be what you want to hear- it is better to know truth, then to make many attempts wasting time and $$$$ trying to get something to work that cannot be made to work.

Regards,
Ted

Truth hurts, but its better to know, im going to check if i have at least the PAL chip for the memory expansion installed or the one for the stereo kit
My Emax shows 10512… as the total memory available…
What i dont understand is why my output board doesnt have stereo already installed as its a 2212 model…

The guy who sold it to me, might have replaced/removed the chips in fact, or swap the output board of the 2megs Stereo Emax with an output board of a 1meg Mono Emax (which i think could be the stuff).i think it could be wiser to negociate a return with paypal case instead of running around
trying to a get all those, when they should have been installed already…
and maybe wait to find a more "recent" model fully equipped.

If someone here wants to get rid of an Emax II rack or Keyb Stereo with 8Megs, direct message me: lifelike@...
Thanks

I have seen 2 stereo kit ever come up for sale in 8 years,,,,
And no memory kit available either.

I did what you are thinking- I had a MONO unit I picked up not knowing the upgrades not available.
I tried to find out if I could re-make STEREO- but only 2 people on group showed any interest.

And I would have to buy 10 STEREO chip at cost of $300+ before anything else- so I let the idea go.
Then find that there are no RAM kits or way to upgrade RAM if you don't have the expansion boards, so had to drop that idea as well.

I found STEREO unit (but unknown memory size) on Craigslist and bought it for like $275…. it arrived and keyboard was destroyed BUT boards OK AND 8MB. :-)

I swap boards around and sold off my extra boards from MONO to make 1 STEREO 8MB unit in good keyboard case….

Total cost for me of two keyboard was $450 to get a good one…

That was my experience with it.

Regards,
Ted
