one of the main things is LO-CUT and HI-CUT when mixing, your elements need room to show the sound. so i have this plugs on every channel i work on. next are my outboard stuff : Urei 1176,Telefunken Comps,Pultec Eq,Sontec Eq,Api 2500,Waves L2... i usually make long chains with lots of eq and compression, but every machine is just doing a little !! so maybe 2-3 compressors in a row for a BD !!! also stuff like transient designer are very important for me...... one of my secret wappons are the HDB TMA2 valve-mic-preamps, they are great to send some synths or perc. thru it ! if you have more questions, just ask :-) greetz Rob

Have you ever tried the FMR compressor in "nice" mode in place of your chain of 3 compressors? Supposed to achieve similar benefits, since internally that's exactly what it does. BD? "transient designer"? - Roger

Hello, I assume BD is Bass Drum... or Kick Drum ;-) Transient Designer is from SPL ( http://www.spl-usa.com/Transient_Designer/in_short.html <http://www.spl-usa.com/Transient_Designer/in_short.html> ) But there is a brand new plugin to do that : http://www.voxengo.com/tmodder/ <http://www.voxengo.com/tmodder/> Hey Rob ! Telefunken, Pultec, Urei... woawww, what a setup ! I'm still playing lotery to win money to afford this kind of stuff... but for now, with some analog synth and some plugins (Eq, Filter like you..) , i can get quite good result. I think my next buy is FATSO from Empirical Labs. Best regards. Pierre.

i also have an FMR, but its not the same, cause the FMR is very neutral. but nice ! i use the expensive stuff to colour the sound, its the 5% sound that makes the difference in the mix.... btw. the distressor is a great comp !!!!! i dont use multiband comps cause they do not sound good on 12" for me.... also using alot the UAD1 !! cause the emulations are very close to the hardware stuff...... greetz rob --- In elektron-users@yahoogroups.com, "Roger Scott" <rogers@c...> wrote: > Have you ever tried the FMR compressor in "nice" mode in place of your > chain of 3 compressors? He already listed some limiters and compressors that costs $5k plus each. Gear like that would be deadly in the hands of somebody who knows how to use it and I think rob does ;p

take a look at the waveform (can you say "brick wall"? :-)
my guess is that there's some compression and limiting at work here.....
but yes, I'd also like to hear some tips, as Rob's beats always come
through quite well.

Those 5K limiters and compressors can be made for approx 200 - 300 euro. www.groupdiy.com <http://www.groupdiy.com> If you can't build one i am willing to build one for you for a 65 euro fee. You have ssl 4000 clone and Urei 1176 Clone. They sound great! Especially the ssl sound excellent on drums. Jeffry

Gyraf did the board layout all info can be found on his site. Partlists tips and tricks etc can be found on forum <http://www.groupdiy.com> www.groupdiy.com <http://www.gyraf.dk/gy_pd/ssl/ssl.htm> http://www.gyraf.dk/gy_pd/ssl/ssl.htm ssl stereo compressor link <http://www.gyraf.dk/gy_pd/1176/1176.htm> http://www.gyraf.dk/gy_pd/1176/1176.htm the Urei LN1176 (purple audio now also sells boards but at a high price (but they are better): http://www.purpleaudio.com/Product/MC76Kit.html <http://www.purpleaudio.com/Product/MC76Kit.html> http://www.gyraf.dk/gy_pd/pultec/pultec.htm <http://www.gyraf.dk/gy_pd/pultec/pultec.htm> The pultec mono EQ this thing is awsome! and so easy to build I can build complete units for you but you can do it yourself. I only do it for people that cannot use a soldering unit. You can buy your own parts and supply them to me and i will build it for 65 Euro. I can also order everything and build it. You pay in advance but i choose the parts (i only do a class since the unit cost original 2000 bucks so its equipped with a class parts.) Most expensive to purchace is the 19 U rack and printing and the panel meters. On the LN1176 the trafo's are expensive. As i said before you will pay approx 200 - 300 (350 for a real nice one) for parts etc. If you need to know more mail me personally since this is a bit OT on a elektron forum. Regards, Jef
