Wavetable ROMs

Wavetable ROMs

2009-05-20 by Louis van Dompselaar

I know I have asked this before, but I seem to have misplaced the
reply...

I have the blue labeled 2716 EPROM and green and red 2764.

Is the blue labeled one the Digisound ROM?

Re: Wavetable ROMs

I think the Digisound one was a red labeled 2716.

Ok,thanks.

I was actually asked this by someone who owns the Digisound VCDO and
was looking for other ROMs. If this one is different, would it be a
problem
if I run a copy for him?

Re: Wavetable ROMs

2009-05-21 by sasami@hotkey.net.au

Go ahead. I do hope it is different. I misplaced the code ages ago.

From http://web.archive.org/web/20030402020953/www.cgs.synth.net/pcb/index.html

*CGS02_R1. This wavetable ROM is a custom wave table of 4 banks of 8
waveforms. (NOT the Digisound wavetable) that I have created. I'm not sure
of the origins of the waves, as I prepared the prototype ROM some time ago.
Some may have been modified from the PPG. Some are definitely custom. All
wave forms are 64 step. They are supplied on a second-hand (used) 2716. Each
ROM has been tested in my own wavetable module. The price covers the cost of
the device (yes, I had to purchase them) and the amount of time I have to
stuff around to actually burn them. The banks in these are a subset of the
CGS02_R2, and the actual banks present may vary between ROMs. Lucky dip!
There are only a limited number of these available. This ROM is NOT
compatible with the Blacet Miniwave.

#CGS02_R2. This wavetable ROM is an expanded version of CGS02_R1, a custom
wave table of 8 banks of 8 waveforms. (NOT the Digisound wavetable) that I
have created. I'm not sure of the origins of the waves, as I prepared the
prototype ROM some time ago. Some may have been modified from the PPG. Some
are definitely custom. All wave forms are 64 step. They are supplied on a
second hand 2732. Each ROM has been tested in my own wavetable module. The
price covers the cost of the device (yes, I had to purchase them) and the
amount of time I have to stuff around to actually burn them. These will only
work in the later CGS02 version of the wave table. There are only a limited
number of these available. This ROM is NOT compatible with the Blacet
Miniwave. Note: The four banks of CGS02_R1 are on this ROM, along with
another four banks.

From http://web.archive.org/web/20041018074514/www.cgs.synth.net/pcb/index.html

*CGS02_R3. This wavetable ROM set consists of two 2764 chips and contains an
array of custom wave tables of 8 banks of 8 waveforms at 128 bytes per wave
that I have created. They are experimental in nature. Some a good, some not
so good. This is the only ROM option available at the moment because I no
longer have access to a ROM burner. The supplied ROMs are SECOND
HAND/RE-USED devices. This ROM is NOT compatible with the Blacet Miniwave.

Re: Wavetable ROMs

Any chance of posting the ROMs here? I understand your not wanting to support people's tinkering with the wavetable circuits anymore, but it'd be cool to hear them. I am getting back into perfboard and working on a VCDO now, basically based on the CGS and Digisound. For VCO I have an SSM2030 which might work, but I will most likely see if I can make something with XR2206.

I am certain I can build the circuit, but I am still not so sure about creating the tables. How did you go about creating them, Ken?

Re: Wavetable ROMs

2009-05-22 by Louis van Dompselaar

By the way, in the 80's Elektor Sampler book there is an interesting
circuit
where the higher wave clock is generated from a normal pulse using a
PLL. I am looking
into this as VCO's tend to be less accurate scale-wise in the higher
frequencies and if
one is clocking the wavetable it can't be used for much else (unless you
run it through a divider). Upscaling the clock with a PLL would
probably
solve all that.

PLLs are NEVER that good at this task. The are bad enough that doepfer
released one as a module to exploit these tendencies.

Well, Doepfer is one of the co-authors of the Elektor Sampler book, so
that
might explain it...

Sp-sp-sp-roingggg!

I don't know if I'd want a PLL in my main VCOs, but they can be fun to play with. The OSCar synth used them, and Grant Richter is fond of them. Somebody on the Electro-music Lunetta forum made an oscillator out of two PLLs trying to track each other!
