Is there any substitutes that would work for that module cause i cant
find that russian tube and i really want to make it very badley, it
looks beutifull!! the more subs that you might know of the better
chance i can find it and make it, thanks for the help.

I do not know if there are any other substitute besides the one
listed at the CGS website, which mentions the 1J17B with a slight
modification.

After doing a web search, I found that they are available from a
couple of European vendors and on Ebay.

Has anyone found any data sheets on these tubes?? I found this page
for a "1Zh24B" which I am guessing is the same as a 1SH24B:

http://www.russiantubes.com/prop.php?t=12&p=7

Unfortunately, it doesn't show the pinouts. Does anyone know what
pin 3 does?? I am unfamiliar with the symbol in the CGS 65 schematic.

I also found this data sheet, complete with what I imagine are E/i curves:

http://home.arcor.de/rhapidophyllum/1j24b.gif

There also several other PDF's here:

http://mitglied.lycos.de/bk4/tubes.htm

However, I cannot understand them because I do not speak Russian or German.

Only in russian!

It looks like it is the same tube.

Yes it does.

There should be many tubes that can be used in this cct.
I use a 1AG5, changed some resistors, different pinout, maybe it
doesn't sound the same as Ken's but it certainly works.

Look for pentodes with 1.2V (1.25V ok too!) directly heated cathodes
and other similar specs on this list -

That's very interesting, since that tube is listed as a diode pentode.

Thanks, there is some very useful information there.

I have two concerns with using tubes -- current draw and plate
voltage -- since I would like to run whatever I build off of the
+15/-15 supply used to run my modular.

Some of the tubes listed with 1.25VDC heater voltages draw as much as
300mA of current. However, there are a number of good prospects on
that list. Some list both low heater voltages and very large (5M)
resistors to ground, which strikes me as unusual.

The 6419 is listed as a "power amp pentode" although I'm not sure
what they mean by "power amp" as it says it has a plate resistance
of 2M. Regardless, it says it draws 10ma with a 0.625V heater
voltage, and has a specified plate voltage of 15V. I'm thinking it would
not be suitable for the CGS65, but having such a convenient plate
voltage invites further investigation.

http://www.nj7p.org/Tube4.php?tube=6419

A found a place selling them for $8 USD.

The 6611 "RF pentode" lists 20ma at 1.25V for its heater, and
plate 30v. That looks like it might work in the CGS65 with some
modification.

Also, $8, http://www.tubedepot.com/tcp26.html

The 5884 (1.25v, 10ma, plate 20v) and 5885 (1.25v, 20ma, plate 13.5v)
twin tetrodes also look potentially useful, despite their lack of a
suppression grid. Who knows, secondary emissions might have an
interesting effect on the sound.

I can't seem to find a suitably low-power triodes or twin triodes for
the power supply I would like to use. Although I'll keep looking, as
I have ideas for triode-based filters, even though they only exist in
my mind and may not actually work in reality.

Yes, you are correct. I just didn't know what the dashed line for pin
3 represented.

some questions:

when the plate voltage is listed as 45V, is it ok to run 30V? how would you
determine the range of acceptable voltages?

anyone know of any books or deccent web sites on tube circuit design? i want
to see all the math and models and what not. I have a little bit from a text
book written in the 60s but its not great.

btw, I'm working on a filter using the 1j17b, hopefully i can test it soon.

Voltages specified are usually MAXIMUM voltages, so running a 45V plate at
30V is fine.

I found this site a while ago with tons of scanned books about
electonics from the 1930's, 1940's etc: <http://www.pmillett.com/
tecnical_books_online.htm>

For example:

"Theory and Applications of Electron tubes, Herbert Reich, 2nd
edition 1941, 716 pages
If there's one book that will bust my website's bandwidth limits,
this may be it. 716 pages of vacuum tube theory, this may be THE
best book about vacuum tubes. Detailed, complete with plenty of math
and drawings. Covers how tubes work and how to design circuits
around them, with chapters on class A/AB1 and AB2/B amplifier design,
power supplies, and more!"

With kind regards,
Ben

I set up a Yahoo group for storing and sharing tube schematics (for
synths) last year.
if you are keen on building or dreaming about building a tube synth,
please join -

There is already plenty in the files section to get you started

Tube VCA / Timbral Gate

hey guys. newbie questions: how big is the pcb of the Tube VCA/Timbral
Gate? Will it fit the eurorack format? any potential problems of
mouting and running it with a eurorack modules/doepfer power supply?

thanks!

Re: Tube VCA / Timbral Gate

It's longer than will fit vertically behind a eurorack module, but can
be cut in half and the connections re-joined. The pads are already on
the board for this very purpose.
I just mounted mine horizontally on an "L" bracket.

PS - Do fit a feedback pot as suggested by Ken on the CGS site. It's
well worth it ;-)

cheers,
Dave

Great, thanks Dave!

So you have yours modded for euro rack? Would you, or anyone else, mind
sending photos? That would be of great help.

I can't seem to find any audio clips/examples of either..i'd love to hear
what it sounds like before I venture into the build.

Thanks much,

I forgot to ask:

What about power supply? Do I need to regulate anything to run with a
doepfer diy kit #1 power supply?
http://www.analoguehaven.com/doepfer/a100diy1/

This doesn't look like too difficult of a build. Is it? This will be my
first proper build. I've circuit bent a few pedals before. In the case
that I don't have the time/patience, would someone be willing to build this
for me? For compensation, of course.

Thanks again!

There are photos, as well as my mods, in various threads on the CGS
forum on electro-music.com. Also, afaik, if you build a dual unit in
Eurorack format, there is panel space for bias knobs.

There also might be audio clips on that forum, and on Richard

i've built a couple, splitting the board so it can be "folded" and the
2 halves mounted parallel to the panel. pics:

mine are in frac format, but euro would be essentially the same approach.

wonderful module... do not omit the feedback control.
