Floppy drives for AKAI S series sampler are relatively expensive,- not every drive works.
Think about ditching the floppy and replace it by a 3.5" SCSI ZIP- or MO-drive.

Take care, AKAI S-series samplers can access drives up to 520MB / 512kb sectors only.
In case of a MO-drive,- it should handle magneto optical media disks 128MB-520MB /512k

In have Fujitsu 3.5" magneto optical drives which work fine w/ S-1000PB, S-1000, S-1100 and my EMU e64 samplers.
I found the drives cheap @ebay.
For the Akais, I´m using Verbatim 230MB media and only the EMU is able to use 640MB/ 1024k media.

There´s a mod of the Akai IB-103 SCSI card necessary to assemble SCSI dives internaly in S- series samplers.

You probably find more details at Route66Studios website,- and maybe Rish chimes in here.
He has all the info on AKAI floppy drives and ZIP / MOD modifications.

hope that helps

I was never able to fully config a floppy for the Akai S series but I will say the clown selling them on EBay for $149.00 is crazy! That's a rip off and they are not even black bezels wh

You can get an intern SCSI zip 100 for about $40.

Hi there,

the Akai S1100 floppy drive is a Teac FD-235HF which is used also in
PC; if you find one which works, you have just to change the Teac
FD-235HF PC floppy drive jumper in the Akai S1100 jumper position
(take a look at your old floppy drive).

Hope this help.

Not true teac made about 10 revisions of the FD-235-H series drives, I know this as 7 of them I worked on with Teac. They no longer make these drives.

The drive found in the Akai that was a Teac is like 14yrs old and way out of production. The most current Teac 235 will not work by making a magic jumper change, sorry.

Great! I'm a lucky man. I found 2 Teac FD-235 (2 different revisions)
on eBay (3 euro both) and it's works on my S1100 and my S3000i. I've
just changed the jumper position.

Thanks for all the replies guys, very much appreciated!

think i'll deffo look into the internal scsi option if i can get one for a good price.
its a real shame as the unit has a scsi card already installed but i cant get it to read my zip or cd drives for some reason.

dont know if theres a solution to that issue but would welcome any further advice if its out there?

Re: S1100 Floppy Drive

Hi Rish,

not much mate, the floppy is dead for sure and the when i hook my zip drive up to the scsi port it keeps coming up as "hard disk drive not ready" or "no disk" and wont allow me to read/format the zips as a result.
when i press the disk button the zip drive tries to read the disc but fails.
i have tried a number of different discs and a different drive and the same thing occurs.

i am fairly new to this unit but i have read the manual and followed the directions and it appears the scsi port has an issue.

do you agree?

Ya you have to make sure on the right channels and format the zip disk as well. What kind of zip is it exactly?

HI Rish,

i take it you mean the SCSI ID and the Sampler Id when you say channels?
its a 100mb Zip drive im using and it wont allow me to format at all.

i meant to add previously that i also get a "hard disc read error" message sometimes

cheers
Neil

You know it almost sounds like you have a bad zip disc or drive.

Re: S1100 Floppy Drive

2011-08-07 by nicknak110756

Hi Rish,

thats what i thought at first so i bought a second drive only for the same thing to happen.
i suppose i could have two bad drives but the odds on that are pretty slim i recken.

think i might get one more just to be sure but can you think of anything else it could be if not?
out of curiosity, are the scsi ports fixable if that does happen to be the issue?

would love to finally get this unit working so i can get my head round it and make some music

Neil

Well if there are no hardware issues you must be doing something wrong in the setup and selection of the SCSI devise.

Re: S1100 Floppy Drive

2011-08-07 by nicknak110756

Hi Rish

its a possibility i agree but i cant think what as its a pretty straight forward procedure.
i've followed the instructions laid out in the manual just in case.
i have the channels as they should and the connections as they should yet the sampler will still not recognise the drive.

to add, i've just hooked my roland sampler up and the zip drive shows up on that no problems.

like i say, i think the issue may be with the SCSI port as i cant think of anything else?

is this fixable or is it a case of finding a replacement?

Thanks

Re: [akaiS1000S1100Samplers] Re: S1100 Floppy Drive

2011-08-07 by PeWe

What about troubleshooting ?

You have IB-103 SCSI card in your S-1100 w/ 50-pol Centronics connector ?

You have a ext. SCSI ZIP drive w/ 25-PIN connector ?

You have the correct cable to connect the ZIP to the S-1100 and it´s working ?

You have a AKAI formatted/arranged ZIP media inserted in the ZIP-drive already ?

The default SCSI ID of S-1100 is #6 ?

The SCSI ID of the ZIP drive is a different number than #6 ?

You connect the ZIP drive to the S-1100 while the S-1100 is switched OFF, switch ZIP drive ON 1st and wait until the media is recognized by the drive,- then power up the S-1100 ?

You´re able to access the SCSI page of the S1100, see SCSI ID #6 for the sampler and ID #X for the ZIP drive ?

Your ZIP drive is terminated ?

If you checked this all and it doesn´t work and you´re a sure the same SCSI cable w/ the same drive works w/ another sampler,- then it seems your IB-103 SCSI board is defective.

Hi Rish

its a possibility i agree but i cant think what as its a pretty straight forward procedure.
i've followed the instructions laid out in the manual just in case.
i have the channels as they should and the connections as they should yet the sampler will still not recognise the drive.

to add, i've just hooked my roland sampler up and the zip drive shows up on that no problems.

like i say, i think the issue may be with the SCSI port as i cant think of anything else?

is this fixable or is it a case of finding a replacement?

Thanks

2011-08-08 by Les Lambert

Apologies if you already tried this or if it's not applicable to your problem, but........,

On my Akai S3200 there is a small piece that can die and give this problem. It's actually a fuse for the SCSI board. Its purpose is to protect the card from damage if too many termination
voltagesd appear on the socket. It seems to be a problem more than a
help. None of my other scsi items have it, and I've had no problems with
 any of them.
It looks like a ceramic capacitor, almost square with rounded corners, thin and flat, with two wires coming out of one edge soldered onto the board with the internal and external connectors on it, The SCSI board in fact!.

I replaced it and everything was fine again. I didn't have an internal SCSI drive fitted at the time, so can't comment on all symptoms, but no external drives seen at all.

They seem to go pretty cheap these days, I will make you a deal if your unit is full on memory and you get one with a good amount say (8meg card) I will buy it from you to help offset the cost as I have a unit that needs some memory.

Re: S1100 Floppy Drive

Thanks for the offer Rish but i'll have to hold off till i see what turns up.
if i do buy another unit i will give you a shout as my current one is almost fully loaded and wont need much more memory to top it up.

i just ordered an internal zip as you suggested so gonna give that a go first.
im hoping the fault is in the scsi connector at the rear so this may be a cheap solution if it works!

Re: [akaiS1000S1100Samplers] Re: S1100 Floppy Drive

2011-08-08 by Rish

Ok...sounds good, you will need to order a 50 pin IDE thru board header and solder it in place on the tail end of your SCSI card. Then you will need about a 20in 50 pin IDE cable with ends on it, that will allow you plug in your new internal drive. Make sure you have it plugged in the correct direction pin 1 stripe on cable. If you make a mistake with the cable it won't damage anything but won't work correctly.

Life is like MIDI, your either IN, OUT or THRU.

Then you will need about a 20in 50 pin IDE cable with ends on it, that will allow you plug in your new internal drive. Make sure you have it plugged in the correct direction pin 1 stripe on cable. If you make a mistake with the cable it won't damage anything but won't work correctly.

Re: [akaiS1000S1100Samplers] Re:Akai SCSI bus not seeing external drives

2011-08-09 by Les Lambert

I got the part from my friend who fixes this kind of thing at a studio equipment hire company. Sorry that's no help at all I know.
There is a guy selling them on ebaY from time to time, he only charges about 500% markup, for knowing what the problem is likely to be.
The information you get here for free, that is. I didn't want to encourage him by sending him more clients, obviously he can do what he likes to make a living, it's his business.

Maybe we should all stop being so friendly and start charging lawyer-style for
the time we spend reading, typing, having coffee.
OOOPS, my friend's a lawyer, imagine saying that! Must be the stress of the rioting here in London.

You only need a fuse in the position, it doesn't actually need to be a solder in flat pack one, though obviously that's the simplest repair, if you have access to the correct part.

No offer contained here constitutes a contract, and injury sustained during riots may not be deemed tantamount to deriliction of duty on the part of any staff member whether allegedlly committed during his or her work rota or coffee break, dress down Friday not specifically excluded although local conditions may mean that.. ..

Re: S1100 Floppy Drive

2011-08-12 by nicknak110756

Hi Rish.

got my internal zip today and have been looking on line for the "50 pin IDE thru board header" you mentioned but i cant for the life of me find what it is.
there seems to be so much under that term its left me confused.
if its not to much trouble can you send me a link to the product please?

im off on holiday on monday and was hoping to get this up and running before then tho its not looking likely!

Many Thanks
Neil

Then you will need about a 20in 50 pin IDE cable with ends on it, that will allow you plug in your new internal drive. Make sure you have it plugged in the correct direction pin 1 stripe on cable. If you make a mistake with the cable it won't damage anything but won't work correctly.

Then you will need about a 20in 50 pin IDE cable with ends on it, that will allow you plug in your new internal drive. Make sure you have it plugged in the correct direction pin 1 stripe on cable. If you make a mistake with the cable it won't damage anything but won't work correctly.

Then you will need about a 20in 50 pin IDE cable with ends on it, that will allow you plug in your new internal drive. Make sure you have it plugged in the correct direction pin 1 stripe on cable. If you make a mistake with the cable it won't damage anything but won't work correctly.
