Introduction From Longtime Lurker

Introduction From Longtime Lurker

2013-05-20 by scottw

Hello Fellow Simmons Fanatics,

Joined here quite some time ago but never posted until now. Anyway, I am a 46 year old drummer from West Tennessee in the USA. Back when Simmons first hit the market, I was a teenager when Simmons first hit the USA and finally bought one second hand in late 1989. I have owned bunches of E-Kits over my long drumming life from Simmons SDS7, SDS8, SDS9, SDS1000, Yamaha DTXtreme IIS, Dtxtreme III, ddrum SE4.0(original ddrum when they were made in Sweden).
Last year, I got all nostalgic and began collecting vintage Simmons Gear. In a short time, I managed to get a SDS7 module, Analog Clap Trap, SDS1000, SDS9. Out of all the Simmons Pads, the SDS9 series are still my favorite pad of choice. I have collected 18 Red SDS9 tom/snare pads and 2 SDS9 Kick Drum Pads. I scored a very rare gem last year when looking through local Craigslist Ads and found a 1 owner complete Simmons SDS9 Kit within 150 miles of my home. I made the long drive and met the original owner who turned out to be a very beautiful middle aged woman who ordered the Simmons SDS9 Kit brand new in 1988-89 complete with Hybrid Fitted Cases. She worked for George Steinbrenner (Yankees Owner) as part of a touring house band that played all his hotels. She had pix of herself singing lead and playing the kit. She looked just like Sheena Easton back in the 1980's. She shared many pics and stories of playing the Simmons Kit which I bought from her. She retired from touring and kept the drums in storage for over 20 years. They were a time capsule when she opened the Hybrid Drum Cases to reveal a mint condition SDS9 Kit complete with SDS9 Module. I picked them up or a mere $350USD. Anyway, I play the kit daily and have converted all the tom pads into dual trigger zone pads which I use with a new 2Box Drumit Five Module. The Simmons SDS9 Pads still play and feel better to me than most current brands of pads on the market. Well, that's my story and I am sticking to it. I added a photo album here on the group showing off my pride and joy. Thanks for reading.

Thanks for sharing your wide experience. Being currently trying to define
the best pads to play my SDS-III, V and 7, may I ask why do you prefer the
SDS-9 pads ? Would you prefer them over the III, V or 7 pads ?

Phil

I like the SDS-III pads since they have real skins... they're also
bloody stylish. :D

I quite agree with you.
Now regarding sensitivity, ease of play, etc... are they all identical ? Is
it only a difference in looks ?
And do they all output the same voltage ? I read somewhere that they go
from 0 to 15V is that correct and true for all SDS-III, V & 7 pads ?

Regards,
Phil

It's far from voltages. The pad inputs are using far lower values. It's
the sequencer inputs that range from circa +3 to +15 depending on model.
The pads output millivolts up to 1,5 (If I recall correct). I bet
Wolfgang can tell you more. Some have limiting resistors in the pads and
some at the outputs of the brains etc. It's no clear science! ;)

I see. So that would mean that the pads themselves output very low voltages
then. And are these low voltages comparable/within the same kind of range
among SDS-III, V and SDS-7 pads ? In other words, can I get the same
response from all 3 brains with all 3 kits indifferently ?

Hi Phil.
I have a SDSV and SDS7 brains and SDSV and SDS9 pads and the only thing I can say is that on some occasions I´ve used the SDSV pads with the SDS7 brain, and the response is quite different in terms of sensitivity etc...The SDS9 pads have a better response with the SDS7 brain than the SDSV pads. I don´t knowthe reason why, but that's the experience I've had.

No, in fact they're different. I think someone else can give the correct
voltages but I recall the SDS-9 is the odd bird here...
