Simmons SDS 1000 & MTM

Simmons SDS 1000 & MTM

2013-04-23 by HH

Hello again!

I have a SDS 1000 & am wondering if a MTM system would work with it? The SDS is nice, but I have visions from the 80's when I would go to a keyboard store & they had either the SDX (or the MTM) that could be played & it was AMAZING!

If the MTM adds a ton of incredible sounds to the SDS 1000, I suppose, I'm super curious to know.

Thanks guys & gals! Chris

Hey Chris.
MTM is a MIDI interface and does not produce sound. It translates audio and trigger signals into MIDI data and MIDI data into trigger signals to drive non-MIDI modules like SDSV and SDS7. It's an amazing device - even by today's standards - and highly recommended if you want to get way out there triggering synths from pads via MIDI or adding MIDI delay to your SDS1000. If you're just looking to add MIDI capability to your SDS1000, it may be overkill.

Thank you very much Ed for painting a perfect picture of the MTM. I don't have synths or the like ... too much of a learning curve for my old bones to dip into.

My MTM made a lot of noise, most, when I threw it to the ground and stomped on it :-)

your SDS1000 doesn't have midi?

many do and if you get one with midi you don't need an MTM>

Often the midi socket marked in is a dead giveaway. :)
(circular socket with five holes placed in an arch along the edge (sorry
if this was too obvious, but it's better to be clear)).

Buuuuuut, some gear do have a socket and non-working midi so then you
have to test with some kind of midi device that do send midi.
(MTM midi thru, for example, is non-working.)

So, a simple keyboard which has a midi out socket can control the drums
of a SDS-1000 if that has a midi in.

there's a spot for midi in and out on the back.

this pic from google has no midi. you can see the round ports on the back are covered over:

This one does have midi. you can see the 5pin midi jacks are where the covers would be!

Hi

I have an SDS1000 and a SDS1000m

They both have a full set of 5 pin DIN sockets and working MIDI

I have seen a SDS1000 without the sockets so NO MIDI

I have also seen a SDS1000m with a full set of 5 pin DIN sockets but with NO MIDI functions

I am still trying to figure it out

If it has a 5 pin DIN socket plug a MIDI lead into it and see what you get

The results will be: -

It works fine

It does not work in which case: -

It is NOT MIDI capable

OR

It is MIDI capable but is not working properly

Hopefully that covers all eventualities

Brian

Re: [Simmons Drums] Re: Simmons SDS 1000 & MTM

2013-04-25 by Nick Zampiello

the one i have has midi and works great.

it's hard to believe they would have SDS1000's in the world with MIDI jacks but no midi.

are you one the wrong midi channel? it defaults to channel 1.

also, it only plays sounds on keys 60, 62, 64, 66, 68

PS, i found instructions for adding midi to a 1000:
don't remember where i got these, i never did the mod myself.

Install the following parts:

R5, R6, R7 - 220R resistors
R17 - 390K resistor
R18, R19, R20 - 8M2 resistors
R177, R182, R250, R251, R252 - 270K resistors
R246 - 220K resistor
R262, R263, R264, R265 - 1K0 resistors
R266, R267, R268, R269 - 2K2 resistors

C9, C10, C11, C12 - 1n0 capacitors
C30, C44, C58, C78 - 0.1uF capacitors

D42, D43, D44 - each 3 x 1N4148 diodes in series
(mount two sticking vertically out of the board and
one across the top)

D54, D64, D65, D66, D67, D68 - 1N4148 diodes
D57 - BAT85 schottky diode

IC6 - 74LS14 hex inverter
IC7 - 4N28 optoisolator
IC16 - LM324 quad opamp

P11, P12 - 8 pin DIN sockets, pcb mounting

L1 - wire link in 0v position
L2 - wire link in +5v position

There is also a 470R resistor suggested between
pins 4 and 14 on IC6. There was a space on the
circuit board for mine, but on some versions you
may have to solder the resistor on top of the chip.

Hi

There is a whole pile of components missing

Now I know exactly what they are

Originally thought about rebuilding / copying the missing parts from the SDS1000M

Having acquired a SDS1000 that had MIDI I have not bothered

I might give it a try now

I am not "into" the 1000 in the moment, but I remind, that with fitted midi parts the software (Eprom) had to be changed. I have a midi 1000, check you version (on the software Eproms top), then we know more. If somebody is interested in different snare sounds, I can sell some Eproms for the 1000 too...

BTW i think that the SDS1000 is a limited but very unique sounding drum module.

nothing quite sounds like it.

they are cheap enough that everyone should have one!

[Simmons Drums] Re: Simmons SDS 1000 & MTM

2013-05-17 by philmurr

I opened up my SDS1000 (non-MIDI) last night and it doesn't have an additional EPROM for the program, just one for the snare sample. It uses an 8051 (with built-in ROM) rather than the 8031 that most of the other Simmons units use.

So in this case I guess I couldn't upgrade mine to MIDI ?

Re: [Simmons Drums] Re: Simmons SDS 1000 & MTM

Yes, there is no Eprom for the software. But the OS must be somewhere, I think they flashed it onto the one-chip CPU. But: I am not into the 1000, I don't really know. May be there is only one OS version working WITH or WITHOUT Midi.
Add the components and you will see. Do you have the schematics?

Best

Michael
