Clapping heaven

Clapping heaven

2011-07-17 by jesper

Hi list!

Two months ago I had the cealing window in my studio changed. This meant
unhooking a lot of gear and afterwards plenty of cleaning. Now almost
everything is back in place...

Today it was time to test the drum synts. I made a simple two bar loop
with four different triggers in Cubase (basically bass, snare, hihat and
cymbal (at least in theory)), fed the triggers to the first machine and
the output(s) to the mixer. When one proved OK I moved on and soon
arrived in my "corner or clappers". This was the first time I really
A-B-tested the two first versions of the Clap Trap (along with E-H Clap
Track and Crash Pad). A sudden mayhem of claps and crashes appeared but
with some tweaking I arrived at this conclusion:
I don't think that mark 1 and mark 2 are identical (even without the
humanizer) or it's just my machines. I find mark 1 rougher, courser and,
well, meaner. Mark 2 is just as good but different. A little more
well-behaved maybe. I ended up tweaking them so that the older brother
played a classic disco clap ensemble while the younger sibling added
finger snaps. The humanizer sure is good for finger snap sounds!

Just wanted to share this Sunday experience. :D

And while at it: That's one expensive disco clap:

p.s. Thomas, the Syndrum pedal assembly works great with the 478. Lovely
with the sustain kill switch! d.s.

Just want to say, that there are 2 internal pots. Very exiting is "resonance". There is also "noise volume". Open them beasts up and tweak, it is sure an experience and fun!

Yep, did that to my ClapTraps as well...self oscillating is always fun :-)
And, Jesper, glad you have fun with your new pedal !
Anybody ever tried the MPC Clap ? That's a good one, too...

Cool - time for a tiny breakout box maybe?

BTW, longshot, but have anyone ever seen a service manual for Star
Instruments Synare 1 (and maybe 2)?

What a great way to spend a Sunday! Any chance of you uploading a few clips so we can hear what the analog versions sound like? I'd love to hear the difference between the two analog versions and compare them to the digital version.
Thanks in advance.

Hi Jesper,

I only have Star's Synare 3 service manual. Not sure if this would help or not.

Re: [Simmons Drums] slight off-topic question ...

2011-07-21 by draughtbonesbsr

Definitely off-topic (non-CLAP) but I respect the brilliant minds on this list< so here goes:

I have an MPC Electronics (UK) rhythm machine with tactile drumpads called simply "KIT". Found in a local pawn shop years back Restored and works and sounds great. Was even triggering an Alesis DM5 with it for awhile. Is this thing vintage and worth anything??

Thanks, Chris

Thanks a lot, but I'm mainly interested in the specs for the sliders,
which are not on the model 3. My Synare 1 is fully working, but 80% of
the shafts are broken off which is more than a little annoying.

The Kit is a classic,
http://cgi.ebay.com/M-P-C-Kit-vintage-analog-percussion-drum-pad-synth-/120752832176
together with it's siblings the clap
http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_FMBJEkaC8Lw/RcJBaVj8XJI/AAAAAAAAAAk/OFGu3M5FRxs/s400/14e5_1.JPG
and if my fuses aren't all burnt there was one more but I cannot recall
the name to google it.

Anyway. they're not very valuable as far as money goes (see the auction
above, not selling at 300 USD). I'd say 150-200 USD would be fair for a
Kit in very good condition, technically and cosmetically.

Jasper - Great stuff! Was good to see those resources & materials ... Wouldn't it be fantastic to have the entire configuration ?! I am not looking to sell mine; I treasure it. It needs a couple of replacement knob caps so that the knobs will all match, but that is in the works.

Cheers,

Chris

Jesper... but I'm used to that misspelling. :)

There's some cool clip with Dave Ball from Soft Cell toying with the
Clap. In "Tainted Love" too if I'm not mistaking. Taking this entirely
from memory...
