Silicon Mallet suggestions

Silicon Mallet suggestions

2010-07-02 by derrick simpson

Hi all,
I'm primarily a keyboard player with a large remote midi rig.....I'd
like to enhance the sounds of mt mallet when using it exclusively. I
WANT to use my Yamaha TX816, triggering six modules as mallet voices
and the remaining two modules for sound effects and tunedsinglenote
chords.
I would also like to incorporate some drum sounds...either a drum
machine or an SDSV for breaks..I have the mallet on a custom stand
with a pedalboard to mix in the remote modules which would live in a
rack offstage.
Could you guys share some wisdom on this..I'm open to ideas before I
squire and build.

Not really sure what your plans are.
Considering drummachines, I really like the Korg S3, soundwise, do no try
to understand it's programming, it's horrible. and I really like the Korg
ER-1, kind off "analogue" digital beast

Hope this helps??

I was thinking of the SDS V for drum sounds....do you think it could
be midi triggered or easily moded to do so...I would use it on the
midi split channel of the mallet.

I'm a keyboarder and mouse-clicker myself and I use the SDS-V like that
95% of the time. easiest way, if you're not a soldering iron guy, is to
get a Simmons MTM 'cause it converts midi to any kind of Simmons trigger
you'll like. I have one for SDS-V and SDS-7 seperately.

BTW, I did some mixing of a track today and realised the kick of the
SDS-7 was messing everything up. It sounded as if it was blocking out a
lot of other sounds. Not that they we're drowned, they sounded as if
blocked in phase. I need to tweak a new, this won't do. The wonderful
world of analogue drums! (or is it just me, being too in love with
modulation?) :D

Also, the TX would be on midi volume pedal so I can blend it in and
out as needed. A drum machine would be nice but I think the main focus
will be on just playing the mallet... With the drum machine @ home for
practice.

I' not familiar with the mtm...I know others that trigger SDS V via
blackbox or other mod. Is MTM a one rack space device...any pix or
specs on this....about how much..still in production?
Thanks for suggesting.

Yes some people are Midifying the SDSV... well some poeple used to do it in
PAris, there were so existing kit for it, so it's possible.

But yes an MTM is probably less expensive though .

I agree, I always hated the SDS7 original kick.
Except the Dualsample cards where the samples has more material (a sort of LINN
sounding ) than the original sucking one.

After I'd expect you talking about the Analog part of it ?
Also very light for a kick card...
Maybe a phase problem could explain that. it would deserve to be investigated
... one day...

This is helpfull...if I can use a 1 rack space box to trigger the SDS
V, that would be great. I wonder how SDSV sounds and the midi note
numbers show up on the mallet?....maybe kick is low 'C' and snare and
toms go up chromatically?.

Paul Maddox's midi2sds2 can do it with a small mod to the output. But if
you're not a tech wiz the MTM is easier.

and, as response to the Q's sent: MTM is 2U high, rackmounted and no
longer in production. The second hand prices are in the region of
100-250 euros imho.

I tend to start with a kick just for a beat, when composing a new track.
When I did this scetch the SDS-7 was kind of new to me and with the MTM
up and running it was pure joy to build further with other istruments.
20 channels later it really sucks, drowned among distorted minimoog,
blipping odyssey and rumbling OSCar and so on. ;)

Yes, there is where the modulation part kicks (pun intended) in.

No time for tech stuff. The chorus works well with a stomping kick from
the Pearl Drum-X so there are solutions to be found.

Thanks...my tech can mod SDSV for midi but is prbly more time and
effort than it's worth...and the trigger could be useful elsewhere.

The MTM and the midi2sds2 are assignable. I have all my drums mapped out
in the lowest octave(s) on separate channel(s). So, in my case, as an
example, I have the SDs-V mapped: kick, snare, tom1, tom2, tom3, cymbal,
hihat. I'm also researching the possibility to midify the pedal input to
close and open hihats.
