Dave Stewart and a modded SDS-V

Dave Stewart and a modded SDS-V

2010-07-01 by jesper

Hi list,

I'm inside, hiding from the sun and adding new things to my shop of 2nd
hand records (www.electronic-obsession.se) and ran across the amazing
single "It's My Party" with Dave Stewart and Barbara Gaskin. On the back
sleeve you find these lines:

"Special thanks to Rod Argent's keyboard shop for equipment.
Dave Simmons & MusicAid for custom SDS V kit."

Which makes me wonder about that SDS-V. What was custom about it? Anyone
who might have more info? There weren't many MusicAid units made...

I remember about a year ago a red SDSV pad set which was supposed to be owned by Dave Stuart: Beside 4 common red SDSV tom pads it had a very tiny moon shaped bassdrum which reminded me of the Roland KD-7 floor kick pad.

How many Musicaid SDSV units had been built? How many Simmons SDSV brains? Interesting question. I would estimate 100 Musicaid + 3000 Simmons

Was it a crescent moon? Mounted on the floor in some odd angle then?

Cool - that might very well be the one behind the liner note. I wonder
what happened to that set then...

Sounds very reasonable. Thanks Wolfgang!

That's just a guess, but the highest serialnumber on an SDSV which I have ever seen was something around 2500 or 2800. If somebody has a higher number: Please let us know. BTW: The main difference between a Musicaid and a Simmons SDSV is (as far as I can say): The Simmons has a zink-coated chassis, the Musicaid not :-) http://www.simmonsmuseum.com/p/blog/musicaid_sdsv3.jpg
It's going to be hard work...

It's greater than 2500. My highest one is 002551. My other is 002355.

Mine's 1046. Does that mean it's one of the first batch? Is that good or bad? Still working fine though! (Better than my sds1000 which is now on it's 4th major fault with the hi tom now gone awol)

I have #72 (Musicaid), #512, #630, #1178, #1788, #2928.
I didn't know that I had such a high SN, it was hidden somewhere under the stack :-)

1289 here if I recall correct. I _think_ they started below 1000, but
I'm not positive. Wolfgang knows best I guess. :)

The net is filled with info about synthesizer production runs and most
of them are wrong IMHO. Many companies started at 1000, some made
different versions with new serials, other missed marking some etc.

Regarding the SDS-1000: You must start seeing it as a "feature" and not
a flaw! ;)

In that case I have an SDE with loads of extra features if anyone's interested. ;-)
