160, and I don't give a fuck if it's from the 80s or 70s, it works
and feels like new ;-)
If I want old stuff to sound for me I use my 1969 R.A.Moog Modular...

I know, me too ;-)
I spoke to Warren Cann when they played here recently and he said he
dumped all the old gear !
They now use all Laptops and new gear, but they still rock and they
were fantastic !
I saw them last year at the Roundhouse in London (on DVD now) and some
weeks ago here in Offenbach !
No Hexas though ;-)
Enjoy a great concert...

2010-04-28 by Michael Buchner

Just received an SMS from Wolfgang. He is now at the place where the legend began: In St. Albans, Herts. In the trunk of his car are some Musicaid hexagonal pads he bought a few hours ago in London. The former owner of these was Trevor Horn.
I hope, he brings some good pictures for our new Simmons book along...

Cool! I just mailed with the swedish guy who bought that weird SDS-V set
with red surfaces that was sold about a year ago. MusicAid machine and
apparently early MusicAid electronics in the pads too...

Trevor Horn gear - talka bout historical pieces! :D

I just woke up....
Yes, I went to London and St. Albans within a 24 hour trip (actually 20 hours drivin/ferry, 2 hours London and 2 hours St. Albans). I was lucky to win a UK auction of Trevor Horn's Musicaid SDSV pads (a real studio bitch kit) and a prototype pad made of solid wood. It weighs a ton. I assume it is a prototype which they made for the SDSV catalogue, but I need to prove this first.

But the coolest part of the auction: A hex-shaped Musicaid cardboard-box with the Musicaid logo printed on it. What a devotional thing! ;-)

And I was wrong: The Homebase store is not the former facility in Alban Park. The correct one is not pictured very well on Google Street View:

http://maps.google.de/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=de&geocode=&q=st+albans+alban+park+hatfield+road+AL4+0JH&sll=51.748973,-0.346669&sspn=0.002318,0.004705&ie=UTF8&hq=st+albans+alban+park&hnear=Hatfield+Rd,+St+Albans,+AL4,+UK&t=h&layer=c&cbll=51.750984,-0.281792&panoid=dBUwTGSx2GWiDPBxTNuqHw&cbp=12,108.92,,0,2.23&ll=51.751097,-0.281773&spn=0,0.001176&z=20

You can see it behind the Volkswagen dealer. I will provide some pics soon. It is inhabited by a companay called "Best Import ltd." http://www.bestimports.co.uk/pages/contact.shtml

However, enough content for a couple of future blog posting. What a day. I need a coffee...

There was even still a a cigarette stub left in the box. I assume this will bring good money in an Ebay auction?! I will taste it in order to find out the original owner of that stub

Hatfield Road 176 did not seem to be inhabited. It's probably for sale. As a real Musicaid fan, Thomas, wouldn't that be an object for you? For spending the annual holidays?

http://www.simmonsmuseum.com/p/stalbans/PICT0576.jpg

It cannot be too expensive though...

.oO(Probably a good place for a *real* Simmons museum one day)

Hmm, maybe we should open a small Musicaid / Simmons museum in there ;-)
Or use it as a Vereinsheim ! Or a new place for Michael for
soldering, no cold feet in the basement anymore...hahaha
But as the taxman snatched all my money we have to put this on ice
for a while ;-)

Hey, Wolfgang, nice score! I saw those pads and box(es) on the UK ebay a few weeks ago. Don't recall anyone here mentioning the listing, though. Is it fair to say that the pads (wooden "shells" or not) with the white Simmons logo on the "riot shield" surface are all Musicaid? I noted that Bill Bruford had pads with that logo in "Bruford & the Beat."

Sheers,

Jim Stewart

We are talking about the same auction...
Only one of the pads, the one with the white surface, is made of wood. The other black pads already have acrylic shells but obviously formed "by hand" and not in serial production. They are not that acurate and smooth. The claw for the tom arms are real Pearl metal claws instead of the later plastic ones. And, as you have correctly noticed, the Simmons logo is also placed under the riot shield surface. And yes, Bill Bruford plays these "early works" in his video. Probably only Musicaid pads had been made that way, but I can only guess... I have a long list of questions...
