The suitcase ended at 330 pounds and this standard SDS-V was sold at 800
euros!:-o
http://rover.ebay.com/rover/1/711-47294-18009-0/4?mfe=sidebar&mpre=http%3A%2F%2Fcgi.ebay.com%2Fws%2FeBayISAPI.dll%3FViewItem%26item%3D130217497382

Ebay is a strange place. Some things sell expensive and other just
barely... I guess it proves that it's a small world since you only need
two morons to get a crazy price and only one lucky bastard to get a bargain.

Probably it's about time to employ a security service.
By the way. Following the suicase kit discussion I thought it was
about time to restore mine. I replaced the disappearing rubber foam
and took care about the loose solder joints. So far it appears "as
new". The only thing missing is the top finish (the red textile).
Probably I replace it against some snake skin or so. Any suggestions
are appreciated :-)
I found out the all parts of the suicase are standard stuff (XLR
plugs, ply wood hexagons and the black lexan/makrolon material) but
the outer plastic suicase. So if anybody is interested to build his
own one: The "expnsive" part are the XLR plugs. If you find a suitcase
like that or if you build a road suitcase (width=33cm, depth=37cm,
height=10cm inside), all other parts together won't cost more
than30-40 Euros. Pics and the stencil for the rubber foam coming soon

... and I would like to share my enthusiasm about the suitcase: A real
funny piece of cheap components but the perfect way to trigger a fully
loaded SDSV unit with "the real feel" of drumming on a kitchen table.
I don't want to miss it. And if I don't set it up on a bass speaker, I
don't have any cross triggering at all

Well interesting ...

It's true that the suitcase deserves a better status...

it's the first multipad !

I could be tempted to make one ...

So thanks for sharing your pics... ;-)

Patrice.

:D

I have a bunch spare piezos and one or two old cases. So yes, I can feel
tempted too. Not sure what I'd use it for though. I've always thought
the octapad and it's siblings are among the ugliest pieces of gear around.

So... If you want to surprise your wifes with something self made, I
will make a how-to guide to build your own almost exact copy of the
suitcase. If she does not know what to do with it: Keep it for yourself

I guess I keep mine then, having no wife to give it to...

But... a cool one with flames and skull-shaped pads would surely make my
daughter happy on the other hand! :D

[Simmons Drums] Re: while at the topic of high ebay prices...

I actually like the Octapad, although the pads themselves are a little
too rigid. I use it for triggering non-percussion sounds, mostly.

By the way, has anyone had a chance to listen to that audio file I
posted of my possibly malfunctioning SDS1? I'd really value an opinion
of what might be the issue with the distortion I'm hearing.

Thanks,

Jim Stewart

Patrice,

BTW, the suitcase isn't the first "multipad" unless you mean a box with
just outputs and no sound generator. I came to think of this today when
I kicked my Star Synare PS-1 back to life.

That one is more of a mallet type of intrument though... a mallet with a
ring modulator. %-)

Yes, for me a multipad is without soundgenerator ...
But that's my drummer historiyal point of view...
After Roland brought some octapad with sounds which became the SPD
series...

But the multipad stay for me the Simmons suitase, the Roland octapad ,
the Drumkat, the Trapkat, the ddrum something ;-) the hart dynamics
(?) , the Portakit, The Drumstation(with sounds), The Turtletrap ...

It's true that I don't know the Star synare you're mentioning...

do you have any pics ?

Patrice,
here are some links (not mine though) to the Synare multi pads. They
were sooo expensive back in the late 70's.

Ok...
We could consider that like a multipad...
& like a sort of keyboard too (you're right)...
I was quite addicted to the Edrums adverts in the 80's but never saw
that.
thanks for the info, the drummer I am will be a bit lessssss stupid

Might be the reason, this is from the 70's and I doubt there was a lot
of distribution outside the US. All I've seen have US plugs and run on
110 volts.

No problem. But first... It was in horrible condition (and still is in
part). There was no guarantee as far as the functions were concerned. 10
of the 21 slider shafts were broken and the pads (which is originally
hard foam) suffered from foam rot so they were sticky and generally
disgusting.

As I remember it being described in the auction; "...large hitting
surfaces that you could dance on, and this one looks like somebody did
just that!" :D

So... I won it at something like 60 pounds which I consider one hell of
a bargain. I saw a Synare 2 (basically a sonically stripped version but
with sequencer) being sold on ebay at 1200 USD or so. The Synare 3 which
is just a pad with knobs around the rim often trade hands at 300 euros
here in Europe.

All sliders do work and there was a short circuiting issue in one of the
pads but that was it. I've cleaned it, added Kenton Kadi (in a spot that
was especially badly scratched WT! ;) ) to it and removed the sticky
foam in favour of new pads, courtesy of IKEA (mousepads originally!).

But I still need to find new sliders, I'd like to change all of them and
add some slider tops. As it is now I have a small screwdriver lying
beside it to program it (to reach the broken slider shafts). :S

Here it is in it's natural habitat. :D

Interesting Synare feature (was: Re: Betr: Re: Betr: Re: [Simmons Drums] Re: while at the topic of high ebay prices...)

2008-05-08 by jesper

Came to think of one thing I've noticed with the Synare. If you strike
two zones at the same time (the Synare PS-1 has 12 of these zones, three
under each pad) there's no lowest or highest priority like on most
analogue monosynths. Instead it adds the voltages together giving you
the chance of reaching higher pitches.

Weird... I wonder if it was intended originally. The PCB looks like it
was soldered at the local (Cincinnati) Zoo.

Have anyone heard of something similar?

cool
does it work with piezo for triggering, or are there some kind of switches
underneath.
The price you paid is very nice, but considering the amount off freetime
I have, It wouldn't be my cup off tea to repair this kind off machine. But
what I see, I get the feeling it's a cool thing.

You wouldn't believe the design;

---------- thin sheet of aluminium ----------
------------ widely spaced tape -------------
---------- thin sheet of aluminium ----------

A semi-good "whack" short-circuits the two sheets and you get a trigger.
Simple but surprisingly effective.
