SDX Discs

SDX Discs

2008-04-08 by rolandbrenner@netzero.net

Hello ! I just purchased a SDX 7 piece system. It has 4MB Ram and no HD. I've since had a couple of weeks to get to know the console and most of the sounds. What I'd really like to have is a full disc library and also the latest OS. I wouldn't mind having a HD in there either. I installed a 500+ MB SCSI disc, but the SDX craps out during the format process ( probably too big ). I might try partitioning the drive in 20MB sections and see if that works. While the seller did include most of these discs, I am finding out that many of them have various issues. Luckily, I have OS 1.4 with fully functional backup copies. I also received a physically damaged 2.1 disc. Fortunately I was able to duplicate that disc to a new one. I have 2 copies of OS 3.11, but neither are working. Can anyone help me in obtaining the complete library and any other discs I'm missing? I attached a picture that shows what inventory I have. Here's the details:
A - These do not load at all. Most are drum kits and sounds. The factory discs are the blue and black ones on top. There are also two O/S 3.11 discs ( with no backups ) that also do not load. Unfortunately, the Bruford kits are also within these unusable discs. B - These are discs that have various issues. Most give the message of loading, but incomplete. Also have issues with sounds ( cut-offs, noises, etc. ). Some have only 2 or 3 sounds on them. C - Sound/Kit discs that appear to be fully functional. I will make backups of these immediately just in case. I've only tested these with the console triggers so far. D - O/S discs. All these appear to be working. While the 2.1 O/S disk had physical damage ( aluminum protector gone ), I was able to make a bootable backup copy. O/S 3.11 appears to be lost and I will need to find a source for a new copy. Thanks for reading and let me know if there's any way you could help me out. I''m more than willing to pay you for your time, materials, and efforts. It is also possible that I may have files you might need. I will be more than happy to share. Thanks ! - Roland

Hi Roland !
Welcome to the SDX World !!!

The SDX only manages 70M° of Hard disc (whatever might be his
capacity ...due to hardware limitations)
but you can add several HD...
My choice was some external ZIP Drive with 100M° ZIP cartdtriges...
I also have an internal 105M° SYQUEST...& still it's manages only 70M°
per cartridge...

I would suggest to use some external SCSI hard drives ...
But if you find another way ...why not...?

I have the full SDX official library...very creative & high market
samples..which I find the most interesting...
I could supply it.

& I have a few other AKAI digitally transfered multisampled
kits...Dave Weckl/Phil collins /Alan White which needs the all 8M°ram
each...

I also could supply them.

I also have one left copy of the huge amount of schematics
  pages if desired.

Please contact me on my personal email , & we'll discuss about it if
you're interested...
due the extreme rarity & value of these items, (I paid about £1500 for
my all sound collection all supplied from Simmons in 94)
all that isn't for free of course but I'm opened for fair swapping &
sharing.

therefore I will have to brief you about some System bugs that could
cost you unexpected sounds erasing...
Remember the softs you (& we all ) have NEVER HAD BEEN FINISHED !!!

But the sound of the SDX stays probably the Best everbuilt for
edrums !!!!
Depending of your own expectations of course ...

anyway,
  have a nice day !
Patrice.

Congratulations on your purchase!

My HD had needed replacing, and I had a friend who had a 7G HD that
he gave me. I just popped it in and was running in less than 2
minutes. Of course it only formats and ercognizes 70M of it though.
I am running OS 3.11 though, so maybe that is the difference?

Good luck.

Re: [Simmons Drums] Re: SDX Discs

Thanks John !
Good thought. I think that's the only OS I do not have. I would have to believe a 500MB drive should work well. The SDX sees it, but again, craps out after a few minutes. Now I can't seem to Fdisk it back into recognition on the PC. Once I get it back, I'll first try a 70MB partition.
Has anyone ever figured out how to create disc images for emailing?

Re: [Simmons Drums] Re: SDX Discs

2008-04-09 by Patrice Jacquot

I don't think that the soft version is important about that ...

As long as you're using the 2.1G or 3.1 (& 3.11)...
I think that you need to put the system software as the first file on
the disc after the formatting ...
& It should be OK...
Therefore I never have been able to do it myself ...& I don't know
why ...
But Dave did it for me ...So it's possible.

& Yes Roland...
forget about partitioning in sections an HD in the SDX...
SDX will do it by itself !
the sDx will recognize & format any HD from 0 to 70 M°...

If I remember well ...There are 2 formatting operations ; the 1st one
so the SDX recognises the HD (Format all)
& the second one to make disks slots on it so you can use them (the
real partitioning operation).
"Format all disc" or something like that ..

for all these you'll have to ignore messages like "error", "BAd
Format " & keep insisting ...

It's a weak operation... that I did many times but is strangely
happening differently each time...I never understood...Welcome to
SDX ...

ABOUT FORMATING ;

YOU CAN HAVE 40 DISK SLOTS ON EACH SYQUEST (or removable) DISK or 70M
°'s one...

DO NOT SAVE MORE THAN 54 INSTRUMENTS & 100 SAMPLES TO EACH DISK
SLOT (as long as you have disk space left...)
or you'll start to erase the previous saved ones without any warning
message...
just next time you'll load them ; the famous SDX user haunting message
"can't find... instr...drum ...kit ...etc.. " ...

STRONG RECOMMENDATION ;

MAKE SOME MASTER DISKS !!! & USE SOME COPIES WHEN YOU CARRY OUT
YOUR EDITING ...

If YOU'RE USING MIDI CONNECTION, UNPLUG THE MIDI CABLE WHILE STARTING
THE SYSTEM !!! or it will probably cause the SDX to crash. depending
of the Soft used...

2.1G IS GOOD For TRIGGERING (pads software)
3.11 KEYS & SEQUENCER

There is a 3.11 versions with pad software from the 2.1G (no
sequencer) which some people are using in preference of the 2.1G
it seems to be good from external sequencing work.
I can't remember what I am usually using...

If you're still experiencing some problems I 'll send you the detailed
process of the Format section !
I remember it's been difficult too for me at the beginning...

It should help ;- )

Patrice.

Hi Roland,
You can read my previous mail ...my answer to shuttlejohn1 ...
these are Dave's recommendations when I experimented all my problems
on the SDX...

Alright Pat, I'll give that a go. I'll take notes on what is happening.
Not a ton of time today though. Have to pack up the mothership with tons of beer & bratwurst for the Brewers game in Milwaukee today. Luckily, the festivities happen to fall upon the only decent day this week !!

Move to quarantaine

This moves the raw source file on disk only. The archive index is not changed automatically, so you still need to run a manual refresh afterward.
