Bob Henrit and Simmons

Bob Henrit and Simmons

2007-09-13 by jesper@electronic-obsession.se

Hi list!

I finally am a happy owner of the Complete Simmons Drum Book by Bob Henrit.
I've read the history chapter and it feels good indeed to read the few lines
about the SDS-2 and realise that it really must be that very SDS-2 I have in
the studio... :)

From the same seller I got "Electronic Drums" incl. a demo record. Looks
interesting too...

Where's Bob today BTW?

A great book, lots of interesting information. Apparently Abbey Mill
is now a very expensive apartment block...

Just one mistake I've found, I think they've got the photos of the V1
and V2 Clap Traps (analogue) the wrong way round though, as the "V2"
they refer to I have one badged Musicaid so surely that must be the
V1 ???

And does anyone know the history of Simmons from around 1988-1999,
locations, sale of company, buyback, products ???

There's actually three different Clap Traps !
MK 1: analogue, raised buttons (like on a 909) and Humanizer, flat
metal case
MK 2: analogue, flat buttons (like on a 808) and no Humanizer, angled
metal case
MK 3: the infamous plastic version with sampled clap
Here's a picture of my three Clap Traps.

OK, no pics in the mails so I created a folder on the list where
I uploaded the pics. Also of my SDS V serial 00002 with red buttons
including the ultrarare analogue Hihai module.
More pics will follow...

Re: [Simmons Drums] Re: Bob Henrit and Simmons

Believe it or not - yes... and at a rediculous price if you think about it's
history. I guess most people have search engines running for SDS-V, SDS-7
etc so they missed out on this. The only other guy interested in a Simmons
friend in Holland (still on the list?) but he kindly backed away to avoid a
bid war. Plus, the picture was crappy and the seller hadn't got a clue so it
more looked like a typo in the auction than the actual unit...

And yes, I will, I _will_, take some better shots than the few already
circulating the net.

BTW, I just received an answer from Bob Henrit so he's still alive and
kicking and I'll check if there is more "ancient info " to get from him.

Great photos Thomas, thanks !

Can't quite see on the red button SDS V but does it also say Musicaid
on the bottom of the cards ? I've a few SDS V's, 1 labelled Musicaid
and the rest Simmons, but no hihat or cymbal cards :(

It says Musicaid on all cards.
The analogue Hihat card is quite rare and I don't know if it ever was
released in big quantities. They then released the digital one with the
sampled hihat and cymbal.

Hi Jesper,

I'm a new user on here and came across your entry. I just bought a working SDS9, well it
appears to be working! I checked you out on myspace, nice tunes man, sent you a freinds
request.

that book sounds very interesting, I expect its incredibly rare,

Anyway, just saying hi.

Hi Jesper ,
Last time I saw him (3 years ago) he was involved in some portable acoustic
drums...I can't remember the mark yet ...
& he's still "the kinks" 'drummer ...
Speak soon ,
Patrice.
