I think that there is a market for a deceently priced modular drum synth.
Pick the best of all worlds and not having to focus on VCO stability. Sell
frames and add-ons. THe technokids with daddys wallet would love it I bet.

[Simmons Drums] Re: SDS3/4 clone offering

2007-06-18 by randaleem

Jesper, and others,

What do you feel is "decently priced" for a basic 4 voice setup (no
pads)?

How about 8 voices? (toms, bass, snare, hi-hats, cymbals, etc.)

From a practical point; it takes about 5 circuits which can between
them take care of most all percussion sounds. After that, you're
adding depth and variations. Then specialisation. And control.

Thanks,

Randal

Hi Randal,
does anybody you know the "VERMONA DRM 1"? (I don't...)
8-channel analog drum sysnthesizer. This might be a competitor and
probably a good rule in finding the "decent price". In Germany it is
sold for about 600-700 Euro

Re: [Simmons Drums] Re: SDS3/4 clone offering

I've owned one, if you talk about the mark II one released a few years
ago... 8 channels with slightly different layout to emulate bass, snare,
effects, bells, clap etc. I sold it since what it did good my other stuff
did better + it took up far too much space in the rack...

My K2-X is 8-channel too and I love the setup with identical voices not
forcing you to think "bass" is bass channel, "snare" is snare channel etc.
You can just tweak 8 snares if you like, or whatever...

[Simmons Drums] Re: SDS3/4 clone offering

Jesper,

What is a K2-X? Internet searches turn up nothing. Is it digital?

I'd be surprised if it is analog. Analog circuits need to be tuned
to specific ranges for best results. Of course a computer can run
whatever program on whatever channel you want. But that's no longer
an analog drum kit. (and I'm not getting into whether one is better
or not. I just want to stay with analog voices for what I'm working
on. Digital for control is great.

Jesper,

So, I'm surprised. I found it in the archive here.

Tell me more about it, please?

"I recently bought an Ultimate Percussion K2-X including two pads.
It's a bit temperamental (bad soldering somewhere?) but a friend is
having a look at it. I was amazed how simple the inside was and it
reminded me a lot of my SDS-IV when it came to number of IC's and
controls but also the sounds it was able to produce.

8 channels and totally analogue from 1984... I'm not going to
complain! ;)"

Fully analogue and top of the line (I guess) from UK manufacturer Ultimate
Percussion. Lot's of 3080's in that one! :)
Lovely british racing green too with a simple sequencer for three channels
with 6 basic rhythms that you can jam along to. I guess that's the point
originally. I often use it as metronome and basic rhythm when testing ideas.

As always, I haven't had the time I wish I had to include pictures on my
studio site; www.electronic-obsession.se/studio

The friend who took care of the electronics that was messed up said a few
months ago something like this;
"You are the one guy I know with the most bizarre collection of old gear"
meaning that I for some reason have gathered a lot of unusual stuff in one
place...

There are a lot of weird stuff to be dug out from cellars and attics around
the world...
I guess you've read I own the only existing SDS-2 too then...
