Simmons went bust, so the assets of the company
would have been sold off.  I don't know who bought
them.

I'm not sure.  The SDS9 had three (?) EPROMs for the 
Snare AFAIK, and they could easily be changed to change 
the sound.  The SDS1000 had four snare samples in one 
EPROM, and you had to take it out of the rack and open up
the case to get at them - I don't think it was meant to be 
changed.
