The SDS8 has one more Tom channel, the SDS800 has the (in my oppionion boring) "second skin" Filter and the (also boring) "run genrator", a cold comfort for the missing channel. As a drummer I would miss the third tom, so my favourite (out of your choice of course): SDS8 is the lesser of the two eveils ;-)
If you are talking about complete packages containing brain AND pads: The SDS800 came with much better (Mark IV) pads

This moves the raw source file on disk only. The archive index is not changed automatically, so you still need to run a manual refresh afterward.
