Matt,
    I think they are stapled shut. Pry back the  overlapping rubber of the 
head surface w/ your thumb. This will expose a staple  that is holding the 
plastic shell to the wood top. Gently work a mini  screwdriver or any thin pry tool 
between the staple and shell. Repeat these  steps until you pull out all 
staples. The shells are brittle near the edges so  work slow. After you reconnect 
the wire to the pickup (That is why you're  going in, right?) you can recycle 
the staples by tapping them back into  their holes or replace them w/ new by 
tapping them in with a tacking hammer. The  blow from a staple gun may crack 
the shell. Or you can drill pilot holes for  small screws and drive some in. The 
screw heads will be covered by the rubber. I  hope my guess is right. The 
SDS-1s are constructed this way and I assume your  pads are the same build.
