well i read an interview with steve negus, which he did in the very  
early SAGA days, concerning the title "how long", which is on their  
first 1978 album i believe. there is a 1/16 note synthie-sound sequence  
at the beginning of the song which is triggering the drum, as explained

so steve has always been in the front row concerning electronic  
drumming (using MOOG drums in the very very early days and as he states  
bringing the first SIMMONS set into canada), probably he had a special  
solution for this.
