Of course you can built everything by your own, it shows the entire circuit! For a friend of mine we built it around an old computer mouse switch, because these last very long. Then we glued everything into one of his left shoes. So he doesn't need any pedal at all (In his other shoe is the bassdrum piezo...).
The examples with roland FD8 or keyboard pedals are for people who don't diy, and there are many.
