Pff, if I answer this question very long and exact, I might get laughed at again by some fellas :-(....
There are 3 different PCBs I know so far, that is the 8K fixed board, the vari 8/16/32K board and of course the double digital board (called dual sample).
The first was used for Bassdrum (and snare in early times). The second for everything incl. hihat, prom size was changed by two soldered bridges. Take a look at www.beatboxer.de, under stories & blabla you'll find one of my articles. There is an explanation how you convert an SDS7 tom module into a hihat. This will be translated in english soon, but the pics explain it already. And: how to convert a conventional pedal for SDSV and SDS7 hihat (I know, that is the thing the world was waiting for ;-)

*Freshing up the german I read in school*

So does the last little drawing work for the SDS-V too then?
That beatboxer guy has given me a hard time on Ebay once or twice I
recall...

Yes, it works, but don't forget the resistor...

And that way I can get the sound of the closing hi-hat too? That's what I'm
after... and no, I won't forget the resistor.

If you stomp the pedal and keep it close, it will "chick". If you stomp it very short and let it loose immediately, it will "splash". By the way: Have I already told you not to forget the resistor :-)? I think, by using the roland FD8, you can go down to 5K to increase chick volume. But for normal keyboard pedals keep 100K.

Is there a way to build your own. I thought the schematics showed the entire
circuit...?!

Of course you can built everything by your own, it shows the entire circuit! For a friend of mine we built it around an old computer mouse switch, because these last very long. Then we glued everything into one of his left shoes. So he doesn't need any pedal at all (In his other shoe is the bassdrum piezo...).
The examples with roland FD8 or keyboard pedals are for people who don't diy, and there are many.
