Please help with grounding (please)

Please help with grounding (please)

2003-05-28 by chorus72000

Hi All, Joe here. Talked to Rex yesterday and it looks like
my "Animal" is shipping next week (joy)... but I've been thinking
about the grounding issues...Sooooo if someone has the time would
they mind giving me a walkthrough with my gear and how I would deal
with this issue = )...(please) I talked to Rex about it and he was
talking to me like I know what I'm doing ( I'm not a DIY person ) and
most likly the only "synth guy" affraid of electric currents... So
here's my set-up... I'll be using a Makie 1402VLZpro as my mixer ( so
I have to ground it )it has a regular 3 prong plug and as a sequencer
a Frostwave Fatcontroler which has an AC "wall wart" or power adaptor
( as some like to call them )or wall hamster...I have one STS power
supply and two bannana to U attachement ( don't know the right term
for that one ) its a U shape that can be attached to screws... If
some one has the time please give me a step by step on this one so I
can get ready for next week... and honestly write it for "dumbasses"
cause I really don't know what I'm doing... Thanks in advance.

Joeda...

If your Mackie has any posts on the back for grounding, this is where
the U-shape thing goes. It will look like a silvery metal shaft fitted
onto a similar looking bolt that sticks out the back of the mixer.

If you don't see that, then look for any screw that looks grounded to
the mixer's metal chassis. Loosen it up a little & slip the U connector
underneath, then tighten it again. The banana part of the connector and
the banana jack on your Serge power supply will connect together with a
long banana cable. That should take care of your grounding.

Hi John, Joe here. The mixer part makes sense ( there is no grounding screw
so I'll use whichever one ) but what about the Frostwave with the wall
wart??? Thanks though for the info on the Makie..

Hi All, Joe here. Talked to Rex yesterday and it looks like

about the grounding issues..

joe:

sts' lit on grounding is on the SMOG website, here:

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/SergeModular/files/

you're going to need to ground the serge to the fat controller as well (or maybe not; i've noticed that in many cases these issues seem to magically resolve themselves just by grounding to the mixer in the first place)

good luck,

blake

Hello,

Don't confuse chassis ground with signal ground. Having a wall wart
(or other 2 prong connector for power) has little to do with the signal
ground. You need (NEED) to have a common signal ground with the
Frostwave, Serge, and the Mackie. This is easy, John told you how
to do the ground to the Mackie, now do the same with the Frost wave.
Actually, the easiest way to handle all of this is to make a little converter
box that has bannana jacks and 1/4" jacks. That takes all the Sleeve connectors
from the 1/4" jacks and runs them to a single (black) bannana jack. All the tips
of the 1/4" jacks should then go to individual (of some other color) bannana
jacks. Then you can run a single bannana cable from the Serge power supply
to the black jack on your box. All other connections should be the obvious
ones. BTW MOTM (Paul Schreiber) makes just this sort of adapter panel.

Hi everyone,

does anybody have experience with the according quarter-inch-to-banana
adapter panel from Modcan? I am not experienced with this system and can
not see "black" grounding banana jacks on this module, nor can I find any
informations on these on the website. Are there no grounding jacks on a
Modcan for connecting it to a Serge?

Thanks,
best regards
Jan-Hinnerk

The Modcan adapter module routes the 1/4" jack grounds to the power distro
module through a regular Modcan power module interface connector with
only the green wire present, the assumption being that the power system
will take care of the ground.

Hence no need for an external banana grounding jack.

I presume the Synth.com adapter module does the same if I remember
correctly.

Regards,

Bill

Another point to remember when a wall wart is used - make sure your ground
connection is established BEFORE you power the equipment up. Otherwise it is
possible for the wall wart powered equipment to jack itself up to a higher
voltage relative to earth, then nasty things happen when you make the
connection. This is a problem with ALL double insulated/unearthed equipment.
