PRO-2000 panel for MOTM (opinions)

PRO-2000 panel for MOTM (opinions)

2007-11-26 by ithaib

Hi all,

I just designed a MOTM breakout panel for my Kenton Pro-2000.

I uploaded the file to the file section. It's called:

motm_kenton_pro2000.fpd

It's the first time I'm using FPE. Before I go ahead and order it, can
someone take a look at it and see if I chose all the right things
(fonts, size, etc...). One thing I'm wondering is if the "CV1" in the
left corner won't be covered by the screw.

I'd really appreciate any input...
Thanks in advance!

Ithai B.

your panel looks pretty good. all jack diameters are 3/8", your panel
dimensions are good (3.485 x 8.735). a thickness of 3mm is just about
right to match motm panels. i didnt measure the locations of all hole
positions for motm grid "compliance".

your concern about a screw or washer under the screw blocking the text
is legitimate. you might consider placing your text somewhere else.
maybe center your auxes and gates?

one criticism: you are basically using an entire additional 1u for
dedicated mults from your 2000. i would suggest you redesign your
panel for 1u and just mult your outputs if you need them. as much as
i know about the 2000, you should only need 11 jacks. use the extra
room on the 1u to make a 4x mult?

one more thing: the 0.4 diameter tool with in-fill will sometimes
cause letters to bleed between each other. consider using the 0.2
tool, which looks really clean. or if you still want 0.4, dont
infill, but just let the raw aluminum provide the color. (ive used
the 0.2 with infill and it looks really clean--pics:

Looks like you copied my format! It's a perfect match with my grid. If
you want, you can put the labels underneath the jacks instead of above
(0.4 inches below center). There's enough room at the bottom. You have
0.05 inches more space there than at the top. I also suggest using the
0.2mm engraving tool.

I did copy your format Richard!

Thanks for your suggestions guys, I will change the engraving tool and play around with
the location of the fonts.

However, why do you suggest I make it into 1U? You feel it's better to have this panel
dedicated to the pro2000 and have more Mults on another panel?

I was thinking that in some cases having it all in one panel is convenient... maybe I'll
reconsider...

Hi,

I haven't looked at your panel, but I have some input on this which may prove useful to you. I am a Frac Rack/Modcan A format guy (which is why I stay quiet most of the time here). However, about two years ago I built a panel for my Pro-2000. I allotted only one output for each of the CV and Gate outputs. BIg Mistake. I *always* had to start every patch with a mult and extra cables. Last year when I designed the panel for my Encore Expressionist, I did the right thing and provided 4-way mults for myself on the first two gate and CV jacks. Consequently, I use the encore far more than my Kenton, even tho I know the Kenton menus far better. I can almost always accomplish the same patch with two less modules and four fewer cables.

My $0.02,

Sam E.

For the record, I have not used the kenton 2000 or the encore units,
so take my advice with a grain of salt, perhaps. I did use the pro
solo for awhile until I got the motm-650. At first, I did want
multiple oscillators tracking a single CV. These days, I tend to
patch my oscillators in multi-voice configurations more frequently.
So I guess it really depends on how you imagine yourself using your
modular. Using a separate mult is (arguably) a more flexible
arrangement, but it means you'll need more cables.
