tau pipe red/green led wiring?

tau pipe red/green led wiring?

2008-05-05 by loopcycle

at the risk of coming off as a complete idiot here...how do i wire the led?
i got the red/green flat lumex led which has two leads per bill&will's bom.
but the up/down is on the pcb separately. can someone help me with wiring?
(i expected the led to have three leads, honestly. i dunno?)
thanks.

Oh jeeze - we haven't gotten that far - our Tau Pipe construction
stalled (moving our MOTM construction operation to new digs). So
we're clueless too. (how embarrassing - well not really - we're such
complete idiots, after all) For that matter, there is call for two
such LEDs on the Jurgen's FS1A we're beginning to develop a MOTM-style
panel for. Help? Bill and Will

Not that I'm there yet, but from looking at the schematic, and from I
think I remember JH said on the electro-music forum, you can't use a
two-wire led such as the red/green flat fresnel Lumex used by MOTM.
You need either a three-wire led or two separate leds.

Re: [ModularSynthPanels] tau pipe red/green led wiring?

2008-05-06 by Scott Deyo

Yes, that's the concensus -- a three-wire LED or two LEDs.

I know I'm a bit daft 'n' all that, but do you really need a green LED
to tell you that the red LED is off?
; p

But there's plenty of panel space for a green one if you need it, want
it, gotta have it -- blinky lights are one of the best parts of a
modular.
Because, after mocking like I did... I'll use a three-wire, or drill a
hole for the green LED!

I saw a pretty one on the E-M forum -- it had a real nice panel ; )

And I fixed someone's. It sounded fantastic, but I had to send it back,
which sucks, because now I have 101 PCBs, but no module of my own.

Hey - Loop

I'm so sorry about the mix-up.  I was certain Will and I had cleared this with Jurgen, and I have email in to him about it.  I guess, if it turns out that the 2 lead LED really doesn't work, we'll use just a red one too.  Again - sorry about this.  If Jurgen says the two-lead LED won't work, we'll correct our BOM (of course).

When I hear back from Jurgen I'll post to the forum-at-large.

But it also seems clear that he's using a dual-color two-lead LED in his FS1A gadget.

<sigh>  Bill

not a problem whatsoever, bill.
i got the beast running tonight. one led works just fine.
thanks for putting that BOM together! you made it infinitely easier for us =)

I agree, although the original Tau Phaser had two leds, spaced apart
so they would flash back and forth. In the case of the MOTM-320,
having two colors is practical because it can oscillate so slowly
that there would not be any indication while the led was off. Also,
if you set it to saw, it will remind you that the saw output only
goes negative if the shape knob is turned one way or the other.

I did not use MOTM-style leds in either of my Blacet conversions,
although I did add MOTM-style leds to my 800's -- which made a huge
improvement -- but would have worked just as well if I used some
other led.

If it's not too inconvenient, could you please measure how much
current the module is drawing?? I'm still trying to figure out how
big a transformer I will need.

Well, do you have a meter that can measure current?? That's a very
important first step :)

OK :) That's important :) Now switch it to measure DC current, and
select the correct range. If the range is too low, you are likely to
blow a fuse. Mine has a settings of 4mA, 400mA, and 10 A (the 10 A
setting uses a separate jack), so I would select 400mA.

To measure current you need to break the circuit, and patch the meter
in series with the load. Since this module uses a bipolar supply,
you need to measure each side separately. So run two wires --
between the ground connector and ground, and between the positive
voltage connector and the positive supply, then use each lead from
the meter to connect the negative supply, so the current runs through
the meter. Read what it says. Then do it for the positive supply.
I hope that makes sense :)

yeah i think so. im basically opening each circuit (+15v, -15v) separately, at
one point, and measuring the current between the module and psu while its
powered up. ill have to find some good safe points on the pcb to attach to (i
didnt use a header for my power).

question: do i have to consider polarity when i place my multimeter in the
circuit? how do i know which side of my DMM connects to the negative supply?

Right, the point would have to be where the power goes.

Unless your meter can only measure current going one way, I don't
think it matters, although every diagram I've seen has shown the red
meter lead connected to the negative side of the circuit (ground or
the negative supply). Which looks backwards to me. My digital meter
will show either show a negative sign or not depending on which way I
put the leads, or which way the current is flowing, depending on how
you want to look at it.

Re: [ModularSynthPanels] tau pipe red/green led wiring?

2008-05-06 by loopcycle

when im testing, i assume i shouldnt just power up one side? in other words, i
should make my three connections normally (say, +15v, ground, ground) and
insert the DMM in the connection between the power distribution board -15v
header pin and the -15v power connector clip from the module (for measuring the
-15v rail)?

ok! for the tau on a +/-15v supply, i measure:

~29mA draw on -15v
~34mA draw on +15v

hth.

Wow, that is much less than I would have guessed!! The
daughterboards I'm planning on adding draw more current than that.

Perhaps you should post your results on the E-M forum.

>hth.

Yes, it does. Now I can use a smaller transformer, that costs less
money, and takes uyp less space. As it turns out, as of today,
Mouser stocks the Hammond 187C36 (36 CT, 12VA) for $11.

Thanks :)

As promised, about the Tau Pipe LED issue - Jurgen confirmed that you
really do need 2 LEDs and that the bi-color one won't work (by now a
foregone colclusion, we know). Will wants to drill an extra LED hole
so we can preserve the original intent of Jurgen's design - so we'll
do that above the one that's already there and put a green one there.
Sorry for the mixup. Bill and Will

Just not to confuse people, JH said on E-M that you can leave off one
of the leds.

You could also use a three-wire two-color led. Mouser sells them for
about thirty cents.

What size bit do you use to make a proper led hole ?

The MOTM standard LED (Lumex SSI-LXH387ID, the red one, for example)
takes a 5/16" panel hole. Bill and Will

Thanks much for the clarification, Mark - but Jurgen did say this in
his note to us:

"The Tau needs two separate LEDs, I'm afraid. (Unless someone offers a
dual LED with 4 pins, i.e. sharing neither anode nor cathode.)"

So I guess a three lead dual-color LED won't work either according to
Jurgen. <shrug>

I just checked the E-M forum, and I did not find JH saying that a
three-wire LED would work for the LFO (it was for the bypass option).
My bad.

On both the pcb and the schematic, the one end of each LED is
connected to a common point (the output of the LFO), which is why I
said an three wire LED would work, but the schematic shows the
cathode of one LED, and the anode of the other LED connected to the
common point. I wasn't expecting that, as most three-wire LED's are
common cathode. The pcb is labeled like this:

Up Down
- + - +

Assuming that "+" means anode, and "-" means cathode, a three-wire
LED won't work, or at least I can't find any wired that way.

Oh well, if you still wanted to use a bipolar LED, even an MOTM-style
one with two-wires, you could take the LFO out and build a driver
circuit on a little daughter board....

OK - now you've done it! <LOL> Will had been asking me about maybe a
driver circuit and I had been ignoring him. I'm not an engineer and I
haven't a clue how to make one. Can you tell us how to do this? That
really would be fun. Maybe we could figure out how to do it with an
MUUB PCB and post it on our Tau Pipe construction page. Bill

Well, I'm not an engineer either, but when has that stopped us?? :)

In order to figure out a driver circuit, we need to know exactly what
the output of the LFO is. JH posted this to the E-M forum:

"The CV range:

Positive only, up to about +10V.
Exact value in manual control depends on exact value of PITCH potentiometer.
Exact value in LFO depends on saturation of your specific TL072
you're using for IC6. But roughly 10V."

While that makes sense, as a negative voltage wouldn't get past D1, I
don't see how the Down LED would light unless the LFO went negative.
So could someone measure the output of the LFO?? It goes to one side
of the "Osc Level" pot. While you are at it, could you also measure
the output of the manual circuit (which goes to CV out in the stock
circuit)?? :)

Looking at the driver circuit for the MOTM-320, it uses a diode so
that the current for each colour is set with a separate resistor.
I'm guessing the green LED is inherently a bit brighter than the red
LED?? An OP-275 is a good choice of op-amp because it can output a
relatively large amount of current, but is unlikely necessary unless
you want the LED to be unnecessarily bright.

You don't need anything as sophisticated as a MUUB-2, as you don't
need trimmers or bypass caps. Noise and precision are not issues if
all you are doing is driving an LED. I used 741's I found in my parts
bin to add LED's to my 800's. I tapped the power where the MAT
connector is soldered to the board, and then built little driver
circuits on little pieces of plain perfboard the size of postage
stamps. I didn't put the LED in the feedback path or bother to add
in the forward voltage of the LED's so they do not light when the
output of the 800 is very low (when sustain is below "2"), but other
than that they work fine.

So we need to find out what the output of the LFO is, so that we know
the voltage in order to calculate the current-limiting resistor, and
so that we have a signal that goes from a negative voltage to the
opposite positive voltage, so that current flows through the LED one
way then the other. Once we know that, we can build an inverting
summing amp and add in an offset voltage to convert the signal from
0 to 10V into -5V to +5V (if that is the case). Then take the output
and send it through the LED through a resistor to ground, or put it
in a feedback path to compensate for the forward voltage of the
diode. Notice that unless the JH 20-Pole Phaser LFO is already
bipolar and symmetrical around 0V, we can't just borrow the MOTM-320
circuit as is. Don't worry about inverting the signal, you can just
flip the LED around :)

Also, I don't have any bipolar LED's except the ones already
installed in my 320's, so I won't be able to test the circuit.
Although, I guess I could sort of build one from two regular LED's,
but then again, I haven't started building my phaser either...

I'm new to this forum. My first post. I hope it's ok to but into this
topic. :)

This topic interests me because I have also built a Haible Tau Pipe,
and I have not designed a panel yet.

I was hoping that someone would figure out and share how best to
implement a dual color LED--mostly just because dual color LEDs are
cool looking and more unusual. For this reason, among others, I've
held off on my panel design.

Here's my question though--even though a 2-lead dual LED won't work
apparently--why wouldn't a 3-lead Dual work (with one lead common to
both LED headers? Or is this not the way that 3-lead LEDs work?

I don't think we have a topic :)

>Here's my question though--even though a 2-lead dual LED won't work
>apparently--why wouldn't a 3-lead Dual work (with one lead common to
>both LED headers? Or is this not the way that 3-lead LEDs work?

All the three-wire LED's I've seen are common cathode. They are
connected in series, anode-cathode-cathode-anode, and the three leads
go anode-cathodes-anode. In the stock JH 20-pole phaser circuit, the
two separate LED's are in series, but go cathode-anode-cathode-anode.
So unless someone can find one wired that way, a three-wire LED won't
work.

Btw, a two-wire two-color LED has two LED's in parallel going in
opposite directions.

So since your phaser is built, could you please measure the output of
the LFO?? It goes to one side of the "Osc Level" pot, or the common
point for connecting the stock LED's. That's what we need to know in
order to design a driver for a two-color LED. And while you are at
it, could you also measure the output of the manual circuit??

Thanks :)
