I have as well. It is and will be well worth the time taken during the
current and extensive research and developement phase that Martin and
John have invested into the project After all, our m400's are still
running and continue to function after 40 years and how many of us have
purchased m400's with one pedistal in the trash bins? Even Sound Sales
the USA Distribtor with their "improvments" couldn't keep the m400 down.

All the information would be out there in the public eye if Martin
hadn't got himself arrested yet again for going down t'pub in drag
and then picking fights with the ladies. He must do this, but I've
never been able to figure out why. He doesn't even bother shaving his
legs. It's all very sordid and grotty.

And there you have the rest of the story...

Wow.

Has everyone checked out the latest?  JB demonstrates the cycling option on the  M4000 prototype.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CmL2egpstKI

So, I'm guessing that the M4000 is a cycling M400, something we discussed on this list 5 years ago.  If that's the case, this will greatly expand the sounds available without the need to keep buying more tape frames, while giving you the ability to switch sounds on the fly (sort of).

Congratulations John and Martin, from what I can tell by looking at these little glimpses, you've created something very useful.  When can we expect more details?

BTW, is the cycling as loud as it sounds in these clips?

I like how they cut out the faceplate from an old M400 to open a window for the LED indicator. I assume that will not be on production models…

The noise is not surprising considering the torque needed to move all those tapes. How load is a Mark I or II when it cycles?

The venerable  "Julia" (MK-I #124)      is fitted with Meccano

chains and driving equipment. It seems to my ears to be a bit
quieter than the larger roller Reynold chain of MK-II, SFX and M300
models.  The MK-I inching for example, is a series of muffled pulses,
vs. the tick-tick-tick of other early Trons.

To those of you who visited the M-Ranch and saw both MK-I and

MK-II models side-by-side, how do they compare noisewise ??
I'd like to hear your comments about this.

I think you'll find those are the soft West Country tones of
electronics wizard Norm Leete. JB sounds more Middle England than
that. He'll no doubt argue that the Midlands accent is that of
Shakespeare, and sadly he'll be right.........

Everyone and I mean EVERYONE, including my bank manager and the man wot cleans my sewer will get a pdf. very shortly and then you will be fully informed.  Watch your mailbox.  The new webpage will go up just as soon as we have time.  Luckily, enough people have had enough faith in us to keep us busy for the rest of the year and beyond.  It will be nice to earn money again.  Product development is much harder than these seasoned campaigners ever imagined and although we are hideously late, we will only ever deliver our very best as anyone who has ever dealt with us will know.  JB engineers the hell out of everything and must have been trained by Hammond.  If it's got two screws, lets add two more for durability!

Just to put this in perspective, we have concurrently, over the last 18 months(the real period of M4000 work, not the chat) restored MKIIs, M300s, several M400s and a T550 and serviced many others to keep the money flowing.  That has contributed in no small way to the lengthy period in bringing you the M4000.  Bolt onto that viral flu that flattened us and JB's crash to the ground and you have the least wanted scenario of any product development.

And to blow our own trumpets for a while, we have orders from some well known artists for these instruments and we are not about to fall flat on our public faces.  (Should that be faeces? - Ed.)

It's not a competition!
At the end of the day it depends what you want from your tron, and how much you feel you can afford to pay for the honour of owning one.
The problem with pre m400 Mellotrons were I thought their sheer size and weight. The m400 was a gigging musicians dream come true. The problem was still a reliability issue. (though I would dispute that for a well maintained machine). BUT, surely the main limitation was only having the 3 voices available.
How cool will it be to have all of our favourite sounds available at the touch of a button? With cycling technology, properly implemented, all contained in a unit that looks little bigger than a standard m400. Fab!
Add into the above cocktail the heritage of Streetly, I know where my money would go if I were able to afford one.
I know for a fact that the reason this machine has been a long time coming, is that JB and Martin have been slaving away doing everything they can to create the perfect tron, both in terms of design and functionality.
I can't wait to see and hear it working. Good luck boys.
From where I'm standing I see a perfect analogue keyboard in a less than perfect digital age. (How's that for a slogan Martin?)

Dear All,

Actually that is my finger and West Country accent. Rest assured the apparent noisyness is due to the AGC on the camera winding itself up to the max. Leaving the keyboard off and the lack of a lid don't help. From memory it is about the same as a MkII.

It was filmed down in Gloucestershire during the final integration of the software. Software in a mellotron - whatever next...

Anyway all will be revealed very soon...

just thinking outloud here...I'm surprised that the scientists at Streetly didn't embrace the
concepts alluded to in Justin Mayer's home-brewed J-Tron...low profile cabinet, 8 or 16
track tape..combining the best of Chamberlin & tron tech with state of the art circuitry and
motors etc. and internal digital efx.

Wouldn't exactly sound like a 'Tron though would it?

Hi all-
Thinking out loud, too. The M4000 guts photo from
Streetly gave me an idea: What if the cycling mech in
a M4000 would retro-fit in an old M400 (with obvious
case modifications)? Maybe it was just the Fat Tire
Ale talking...

Please think quietly in the future.

One thing that should be kept in mind is the commonality and compatibility of parts. Many components of the M4000 are backward compatible with M-400s. This makes perfect sense when you consider the benefits.

if you think it through it doesn't make sense to do all that.
new heads.
[what size? how many tracks? from where?]

new tapes.
[see above, plus imagine the time involved in custom-order multitrack tape
sets!]

built in digital effects?
[why? it would only add to the cost and would no doubt only please some of
the people some of the time - there are affordable and versatile units
that are far more flexible as far as personal taste goes]

...and as frank pointed out: this method retains nearly complete
compatibility, thus enabling part swaps and the sound library
does not have to be remastered/reformatted.

IMHO they did the right thing.

Justin is a nice, clever chap and the JTron is great but it no longer cycles under it's own steam and only has two hand cranked positions.  The M4000 has multiple stations, is backwards compatible and sounds utterly mellotronic.  Due to the mechanism size, it will not fit in an M400 cabinet.

We expected all manner of suggestions about what we should have and could have designed.  What we have designed has been honed by careful consideration and not by seat of the pants thinking.  We deleted the waterproof barometer and kettle descaler after one such brainstorming session.  I hope you all like pink.

Actually, it's covered with pink shag carpet. Jerry will be happy to know that the carpet has been Martinized to a fare-thee-well.

The M4000 will also come with a cup holder, wrongly used for loading CDs into computers all these years. It has been modified to securely hold one British pint of ale. There is a rumor going around that this modification was added to further entice Rick Wakeman into purchasing an M4000. I am stating for the record that this is NOT true. It wasn't until Streetly added a second pint holder that Rick broke down and ordered one.

Mix 'n' match M400s

2007-05-24 by Mark Wallis

Hello all you tronspotters out there,

This would be my first post, having only recently (belatedly) joined the
list..

I own M400 no 151. Oddly enough, her front and rear panels bear the number
160. Does anybody out there own no 160 and what numbers are on HER front and
rear panels?

Just curious..

..and as for the M4000, well.. what a beauty. 'The boys done good' as
footballing parlance would have it here. Time to sell my organ collection,
methinks.

Regards,

Mark

wow - that's one of the oldest serial-number-wise i can think of!
[i have m400 #364 myself, and caretake a couple others (1189 & 1220)]

interesting to have mismatched panels like that.
are you the original owner?
if not, do you know the history?

might have belonged to a person or shoppe that got them mixed up,
or may have been a salvage job...

you get better money selling them off one at a time.
although a matched pair of kidneys might draw top dollar.

wait... did you mean organ as in hammond, farfisa, vox...
or like kidney, liver, eyeballs... ?

Yes, but will the drive belt be pink also? yellow one might be a bit
much, and will tapes be available in contrasting colors as well?!! Doug

Thanks for replying!

No, I'm afraid I don't know her history. I bought her from Streetly (then
Mellotron Archives UK), beautifully sorted and in virginal white, in 1997.
We've had a lot of fun together. Whenever she's needed tweaking I've sorted
her myself. When the power switch arc'ed out I stripped and rebuilt it with
new handmade contacts. It's been fine ever since.

I did mean Hammond, Vox, Bird*, organs. The idea of selling my kidneys
hadn't occurred to me.
However, I don't really drink that much and I DO have two of the slimy
little fellows...

..what's the going rate then? Sounds like a plan!

* Sydney S. Bird and sons, long-gone makers of fine electronic organs from
Poole, Dorset, England. Lovely machines using valve oscillators and neon
dividers. Earlier ones have the most magnificent wooden keyboards and look
great next to Mellotrons. Their Time Will Come..

Lord knows what happened there.. I think the files were too big. This should
hopefully work. Also included is a shot of the ESSENTIAL Mellotron
accessory- the venerable WEM Audiomaster mixer.
Looks great, sounds great, works well, has 4 EQ settings just for the spring
reverb. The mother of proper PA mixers. Good enough for Floyd in Pompeii and
the Stones in Hyde Park.. It can handle anything and has enough poke to
drive a Leslie 145- which is handy if you don't have a Combo Pre-Amp..

I also have a schizophrenic M400. It has the serial #497 etched into
all the metal parts, then scratched out and #500 etched near the
original numbers:

I'd love to know where the other #497 is. Maybe it's even some famous ashes!!

Hi All- I have noticed that some 400's have what appears to be a decal
on the left cheek block. Dave Kean has one with it as does your's, Mark.
Is this a decal applied by Mellotron and if so, what does it read?

Hi, Jim.

The "decal" on Kean's 400 is a sticker of a Cheshire Cat, not a standard option on 400's -- or any other Mellotron!  Mark, you'll have to provide the answer for yours.

'ello again-

Ah. The sticker on my cheekblock is non-standard, as is the one on Dave
Kean's M400. I believe that DK's is a grinning Lewis Carroll Cheshire Cat,
mine is a pic of the Hindu goddess Sarasvati playing a vina. It was the
right shape and seemed to want to be there..

Here's a better pic.

[Mellotronists] Tape Echoes/ M4000!!!

2007-05-26 by Mark Wallis

Cheers Norm. How's the Swarfy Satellite getting on?

Nice impersonation- absolutely bang on. Reminds me of one of the mad priests
in the series 'Father Ted'.. "What's your favourite humming noise?"

I rather like the 'sssshwip' noise that my tapes make on retracting,
personally.

I've never met a tape echo that I didn't like, however limited the spec. may
sometimes be.. I've worked on many and owned one or two (WEM/Watkins and a
Melos).. Rolands are just lovely- beautifully made and so versatile. Has
anybody out there ever encountered the early 60s Telefunken machines?
They're built like Panzers, all valve, 'Magic Eye' level indicator..
Gorgeous. Lots of eminently polishable brass too.

Copicats rock though. I use them all the time on keys and guitar. The lack
of varispeed on most models is a limitation but who cares? I can get
everything from Scotty Moore slapback to Syd Barrett self-oscillating sonic
attack with 2 controls. Switchable power to the motor (always worthwhile)
gives some terrifying sounds on wind-down. Hugh Banton from Van der Graaf
Generator used to run his Hammond into one .. stop the motor.. wind it back
up and it sounds like monsters are coming up through the floor.

Sometimes all I need in life is the Valve Copicat, a Selmer Zodiac amp and
a Telecaster. Keeps me happy for hours.

p.s. I love the idea behind the air filtration/internal pressurisation in
the M4000! Just wonderful! Didn't a similar system allow Zeppelin passengers
to have a smoke room (!) ? Was that your inspiration, guys?

Do you do 'easy terms' ?

Randomly,

Wallis x

WEM Audiomaster mixer on Ebay.

2007-05-28 by Mark Wallis

Hi folks,

As some of you seemed quite taken with my WEM Audiomaster mixer (not just
cute- really useful too!) with its Mellotron-matching Bulgin knobs I thought
you'd like to know about THIS:

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ih=017&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWA%3AIT&viewitem=&item=270123542703&rd=1&rd=1

It's a slightly later version with more controls but the B.I.N. price of GBP
150 is pretty damn good. It's not mine, by the way. It may need some sorting
because mine definitely isn't a 'noisy old bugger'. If I had any spare cash
I'd buy it myself.

Still after an M4000. Anybody want to buy my kidneys?

Bezzy wishes,

MSW

p.s. my germanium Vox Continental is finally fully operational.
No missing tones, no ciphering, minimal background noise.
It's been a struggle.
I need a beer.
And a Z-stand.
