if you think it through it doesn't make sense to do all that.
new heads.
[what size? how many tracks? from where?]

new tapes.
[see above, plus imagine the time involved in custom-order multitrack tape
sets!]

built in digital effects?
[why? it would only add to the cost and would no doubt only please some of
the people some of the time - there are affordable and versatile units
that are far more flexible as far as personal taste goes]

...and as frank pointed out: this method retains nearly complete
compatibility, thus enabling part swaps and the sound library
does not have to be remastered/reformatted.

IMHO they did the right thing.

This moves the raw source file on disk only. The archive index is not changed automatically, so you still need to run a manual refresh afterward.
