VIDEO: Gravity Eyelids - MHz Tv - PORCUPINE TREE live (w/Mellotron Samples?)

2006-02-09 by mlcsixand78s

Another Tron related link.

Obviously Mellotron samples used here... or? an emulated Mellotron Vs
actual samples? P. Tree lists a use of a Mellotron on recent studio
records but I wonder if Richard Barbieri(keyboardist) sampled thier own
tron or is he using some comercially available Mellotron samples?

Anyone have ideas or knowledge about this?

Cheers

I saw Porcupine Tree live a couple of months ago. The show was opened by
Fripp doing about 45 minutes of soundscapes (very nice although noisy,
disrespectful and small crowd) and Barbieri produced some very nice Tron
sounds from his rig. I couldn't see exactly what he was using (definitely
not a real Tron) , but I remember reading somewhere that he uses M-Tron. He
also did some Pro-52/Prophet 5 sounds for gmedia (the M-Tron folks).

Steve,
Cincinnati

Did Barbeiri ever own his own tron?
I wouldn't have thought he'd have much cash left after
buying the Roland System 700 modular! :-)

The only Japan album with 'tron is 1979's "QUIET LIFE",
I have never seen tron listed on his own equipment lists -
I'd guess the tron on that album came with the studio...

My understanding is Steven Wilson is the keeper of the Mellotron... He has used it quite a bit throughout the PT discography and other side projects...
He also brought the Tron to the album Damnation by Opeth (Yes, that extremely noisy cookie monster band)... It's actually a nice listen...
I did ask him once if he thought of bringing it on tour... His comment was "Not with our roadies... They would be swimming in tapes"...

But fake 'Tron. :-)

Interesting... I was beginning to suspect they never actually used a real one. I know someone who knows him, but he seems disinclined to ask him about it on my behalf. :-)
