My understanding is Steven Wilson is the keeper of the Mellotron... He has used it quite a bit throughout the PT discography and other side projects...
He also brought the Tron to the album Damnation by Opeth (Yes, that extremely noisy cookie monster band)... It's actually a nice listen...
I did ask him once if he thought of bringing it on tour... His comment was "Not with our roadies... They would be swimming in tapes"...

The only Japan album with 'tron is 1979's "QUIET LIFE",
I have never seen tron listed on his own equipment lists -
I'd guess the tron on that album came with the studio...
