More Sample Questions

2006-02-02 by bayofkings7

Greetings to all!

OK, I am going to gingerly tread into the dreaded "Mellotron Samples"
arena some more. The Tron is one of my favorite instruments, but I
will probably never own a real one (I guess, never say never ...).

I write/record my original music at home. I utilize both hardware and
software. For Tron, I have:

- "Classic Keys" expansion ROM for my beloved Kurzweil PC2R (I think
the samples are very good);

- Emu VK-6 with "Vintage" ROM (sounds OK);

- IK Multimedia "MelloZone" Sample Tank (just recently purchased brand-
new for about $15.00 US, haven't used it much);

- 2 or 3 free Tron software downloads (none of which I particularly
like).

Folks here seem to like the Pinder CDs. I have seen that Hollow Sun
and Sonic Implants have Tron CDs. No one here (that I have noticed)
has mentioned GForce's M-Tron - it is good? It certainly seems to
offer a big bang for the buck!!!

Anyway, I'm just wondering what real Tron owners who have had
experience with any of the several "copycats" have to say.

Thanks much!

Check out my site www.vintagekeyboardsounds.com for some inexpensive samples of several hard to find classic keyboards. However, if you have the money, the Pinder CD is the way to go. IMHO, it has the best quality with the most variety.

The Hollow Sun samples are looped. Personally, I wouldn't want looped
samples. The beginning of the sound would have to be chopped off to
eliminate the instrument's attack for smooth looping.

Some of M-Trons's samples are pretty good. They also have samples that
are unavailable in any other collection. Some are redundant; same
sound, different name, different sources.

Sonic Implants claims to have gotten their samples from Tron models
M200, M300 and MkII. Anybody know what an M200 is?

If you can spare a small fortune, and if you really, really like the
Mellotron, you might want to go for both the Pinder cd and the M-Tron.
Pinder's rendition of the regular sounds, such as 3 violins, flute,
and 8 choir, is great, whereas the people who made M-Tron seem to have
been less careful in choosing tape sets for their recordings of these
more common sounds. The strength of the M-Tron, however, is the vast
collection of recorded tape sets that may be purchased for it.

But if you want only the most regular Tron sounds - which should
suffice for most - I would advise you to purchase the Pinder cd.

The Memotron's samples are also looped. I have always believed that the
sample should be as close to the original as possible, and if the user wants
to loop them, then they can do it from their own sampler. But they should
have a choice.

The only looped samples I sell are for the Hammond B3, Vox Continental, and
Gibson G101 organs. As they were all oscillator or tone wheel sources,
looping is not such a big deal. B3's do have an "attack" when they key is
initially pressed down as the key hits the contacts (a.k.a. Key Click),
which is a good quality of the organ. I simulate this within the Motif with
an attack parameter.

Mellotrons, however, replicate the actual bow attack (or other instruments)
that cannot be simulated with a high degree of accuracy. So I question
looping these sounds in the first place.

The Pinder CD is not looped, and is completely authentic. I highly recommend
it.

Manikin said they support M-Tron Banks so maybe those sounds can
play unlooped....

Hopefully , not the lower-rear half. Seen too much of that here in
New England farm-country......

Hey Martin and Gordon Reid : The half of a MK-II you own, what model
would that be , MK-1.5 ?? Signed, --Eric , the half a bee
