Hammond T Organ on Ebay - Tony Banks

Hammond T Organ on Ebay - Tony Banks

2003-07-25 by Pishock, Jimmy

Hi Folks:
Seeing how we have many Genesis fans in our email forum, there is a model T Hammond Organ (Tony Banks used on "Selling England By The Pound" through "Seconds Out", perhaps even "...And Then There Were Three...") on Ebay for only $199.00! Take it home right now for $400.00! The only difference I can tell from Tony Bank's machine is that his was black, and this one is a "contemporary walnut" finish-- complete with built in Leslie. I would have loved to grab it; but, the person is too far away for me to pick up and shipping and handling would probably s**k, not to mention it would probably be destroyed in transit.
Check it out....

Hey Jimmy,

I actually just bought a Hammond T-500 last week! I had no idea that
Tony Banks played one. That only further justifies my purchase (not
that it needed much justification at $50)! Anyone know what tunes
Tony played this on ?

Just about everything between '73's 'Selling England' and '78's 'And
Then...'. He bought it to replace an L102, I think. I sold a T500 myself for
\ufffd100 (about $150) some years back - too 'home organ' for me, despite the
built-in Leslie. Also have an L100-P that 'needs a bit of work' going cheap
if anyone in the UK's interested... :-)

I'll have to go dig up my copy of "I Know What I Like" (Armando Gallo's
book). I think it's safe to say that Mr. Banks always used a spinet of one
type or another. One significant difference is that the T series has
tonewheels with solid state electronics, and the L series is tonewheels with
tube electronics. But in the mix the difference would probably be
undetectable. One of the most significant characteristics of a Hammond
spinet is that you can move it from one part of the room to another by
yourself!

Long ago as a prog-soaked teenager I used to rank the machismo of the
keyboard player by the number of keyboards in their setup (Patrick Moraz for
example had pretty high marks). I always had this impression of Tony as
being one of the lesser participants because of this. But in my later years
I have come to respect his approach, not only because he did so much with
what he had, but an appreciation for how easy his stage setup was compared
to what it could have been given the era. Especially his synth approach -
it's amazing how many famous hooks he created just with a Pro Soloist. Not a
winp after all, but a very wise man?

There must be something in the air!!! Two weeks ago I picked up an L-133
myself. With Leslie 120, yet another recycler deal at $250. Patience is a
virtue. :) First thing I did when I got it home was to "Emersonize" it. My
wife (and perhaps the neighbors) were not happy about that, so I had to shut
down after a couple of minutes. But it was fun while it lasted.

The last L-100 I had was sucked up by the '92 ELP tour and I never saw it
again. Oh well, to a good cause...

I am considering adding a treble horn and internal amp to the 120 to create
a nice loud little Leslie. Now begins the lurk for driver/horn/motor on
eBay.

Yup. I nicked one of Mr.Gallo's pics for my site - have a look at:

You've obviously never encountered a T500. :-) It's shatteringly heavy,
mainly because of the hugely thick casing - I don't think it weighs any less
than a C3.

Is the 120 the little one with no amp or horn, and a silver grill? If so,
that's what my L100-P's blessed with. Got an interesting 240v shock off its
fast/slow switch last year...

On the inside sleeve of "Seconds Out", it has Tony Banks' Hammond Listed as a T model. They do, unfortunately, spell Mellotron wrong (spelled Melotron). Poor instrument can't get a break.
Love the ARP Pro Soloist. Have one myself, although I sound more like Linda McCartney than Tony Banks when I play it. Go figure.
Hmmmm. Now that I think of it....
Have a Hammond M3 organ and everything I play on that sounds like "Take Me Out To The Ballgame".
Have a Mellotron 400SM and everything I play on it sounds like "Tangerine Dream".

Anybody notice a trend here? An
ybody know where I can get some talent for sale?!!? I desperately need it!
Cheers!

I know this is a mellotron forum but, with all this Hammond talk, I
figure its safe to ask...

I heard or read somewhere that the Hammond CV model (and all the "V"
models) sound different than the B and C3's. (and T's and L's) Different
tone generator makes it sound more "churchy" or warmer. Any truth to
this? I have one with a trek II percussion and seems ok to me. I just
attributed any difference to the fact that I am a guitar player and
therefore relatively s__k when it comes to making a Hammond really
shine.

Anyone heard this before?

I think the ones with the grills are 114's or 116's. The one I got is all
cabinet wood just like a 122 except it's a couple inches smaller in the
"X-Y" dimensions and only about 29" high in the "Z" dimension. Powered by
the organ amp, lower styrofoam rotor only, 2-speed motor. One person can
easily carry it. Well ok not easily, but without injury at least. Says Model
120 on the label.

The L-100 story is really long - but I was a roadie for ELP in '92
("assistant Moog tech") and later in the tour I had to give up my personal
L-100 because the one on the tour was falling apart and mine was the only
one they could find on short notice.

I have both a CV and a C3 but the CV has been violated electronically by
myself to add crunchy percussion and no longer sounds "churchy" in any way.
I know the guts pretty good on both and if there is a difference I would
suspect it's in the frequency handling of the preamps and/or matching
transformers rather than the tone generators. However this is armchair
speculation, as there are some who specialize in these beasts and could
probably put me in my place :) I originally got the CV (which was chopped
already and somewhat road-weary) out of desparation at not being able to
afford a C3, and at first considered it a poor approximation of the real
deal, but as it turns out the BV/CV is quite a beefy-sounding Hammond.

Apologies for the OT drift, but, uh it's like a mellotron because it's heavy
and in a wood case and has a motor in it...

Essentially all of them! It was his organ in that period. I don't recall
many songs without organ in that period.

The other important difference is that the T series has the mechanical
scanner-vibrato, like the M series spinets and the big organs, while the

L series only has an electronic valve-based chorus. That detail is in
favour of the T series.

I also have an L-122 with a Leslie 760, and I love this organ. The Tony
Banks and Keith Emerson connections is proof that this organ is very
cool.
Also remember that Richard Wright used an M series spinet with the same
sound
as the L series, except it also has the mechanical scanner vibrato. So
all
the old pre-72-ish non-Farfisa Floyd sounds are also within reach on the
L
an T series organs.

Cheers

Yes, this is the same m/c as seen before - same BIN price, but a higher
opening bid ($2K before). The seller emailed me a couple of days ago, offering it
for $2500., and supposedly had someone else interested in it as well. It's up
for grabs again (what does that tell you?), and at a higher starting price.
Relatively speaking, it's not an outrageous price, considering the joker that
wanted, what, $10K for a 400 a few months back!! Some huevos, man.
