Hi all,
I have just become an owner of a 1968 wooden chassis 1600 cc
here in the UK. The car is fine except for one item - the doors do
not fit flush at the lower rear - has anyone had similar problems and
if so is there a fix.
Thanks

Hi Billy, Welcome to the group. I've had my car for 27 years, 22 since it was rebuilt at the factory following a fire in 1978. The original car had body panels that fit almost perfectly but not the rebuilt one. I've fiddled around with the doors over the years to try and get them to fit properly, never mind perfectly, but it has been a losing battle so far. I adjusted, by rewelding, the hinge brackets on the drivers door so that the leading edge was flush as opposed to 1/4" proud but I still couldn't get the lower rear to fit flush with the body. If I had more time, I'm sure I could make all the necessary adjustments but I'd rather be driving than fiddling. I've seen cars with very well-fitting panels and others a lot worse than mine. I guess it comes down to how fussy you are and the law of diminishing returns. Regards, Paul Dransfield 3 litre Volvo

Hello Billy! All bodypanels and doors has a terrible fit even from new (compared to modern cars), this is also true for Lotus and other small manufacturers. But try to adjust the hinge with shims, it might help, but the ones with perfect fit weighs too much because of a lot of filler to remedy. Cheers Mike ----- Original Message -----

Hello Billy, I have a 1969 1600GT with a wooden chassis. I have managed to make my doors fit pretty well, however they don'y stay that way very long. The bumps and jolts from the Marcos' "smooth" suspension tends to knock them out of alignment about every 5 -10 trips, so I am constantly readjusting the hinges. This involves mostly re-aligning the door and re-tightening the bolts. As Mike mentioned, I also had the best luck with putting shims under the door hinges. It is really a tough job if you are alone so I would recommed inviting a friend over the first time you try it. You will have to take the doors off and on quite a number of times to get it right. Well, at least I did. I did make a modification to the strike plate that helped pull the door in a little tighter. Before the modification, my doors would occasionally open during a hard turn. It can be quite exciting when that happens. Well good luck and remember, the doors fit better after about 3 pints. MIchael Rogers 1969 1600GT # 5241

Hallo, Billy, two ideas for your problems with the doors. 1. I would contact "wooden wonders" in Sweden (link on Marcos Maniacs), they have a lot of experience with "wooden chassis". 2. In Germany Mr. Max Memmiger restored a Marcos 1800 GT built in 1964 - one of the rare "De Dion Rear axle" early Marcos GT -. In the german magazine "Oldtimer Praxis" March 2002 his car was the top story. The report of building up the car over years wiht many photos is 6 pages long. If you are interested I will scan it and send it via E-Mail (language ist german). He had the same problems with the doors and found a solution in laminating a metal carrier plate with the fiberglass body instead of the board of wood used by Marcos factory. As far as I know since then he had no problem at all with the doors. The car is racing with success in classic hill climbings. Excuse my english CF --- In MarcosManiacs@y..., "billyg1uk" <billyg1uk@y...> wrote: > Hi all, > I have just become an owner of a 1968 wooden chassis 1600 cc > here in the UK. Hello Billy! I agree, Michael Royson is the MAN to handle problems with wooden "cigarboxes!" Best Regards/mike ----- Original Message -----

The way I solved mine was fairly simple and was achieved after a respray with out damaging the paint.Briefly this is what I did. With the upholstery removed from the door I fitted a 6mm turn buckle to the bottom of the door as close to the outer skin as possible. Then with modellers wire the other end of the turn buckle was fastened to the bottom edge of the metal work supporting the door handle. Now turning the turnbuckle will pull in the door and slightly twist it careful adjustment means a quite accurate fit can be achieved. when this is done a piece of flat steel say 12mm * 3mm can be used to replace the wire hoser and turn buckle.Clear as mud. If you feel that you would like to go this way there is an article in one of the Marcos mags', or if this is not available to you and you would like email me and I will send it to you. jacob@marcos1800.fsnet.co.ukGood luck.
