OK, so I loaded the preset MP3 on my SX-240 and saved it back in a
48kHz wave (1 minute, 5MB size) that I uploaded in the Files section.
FLAC and WavPack only saved about 500kB.

The only reason I could see why the MP3 doesn't work for you is that
it's signal level is -20dB, and, pretty unlikely, the sample rate is
44.1kHz, and the sound card resampling to 48kHz could cause problems.

I think that the very low signal level is the only problem with the
MP3 found online. The CMOS RAM chip in the SX-240 is 4k or 8k, and it
takes one full minute to save that, so the transfer rate is very slow,
and I believe a 22.05kHz sampling rate would work. This signal is
supposed to be saved and retrieved from a cheap ferric oxide cassette
on a noisy distorting RatShack portable cassette recorder without
damage, so I doubt MP3 compression will cause any problems, especially
since it works for me.

As for losing patches, there's a "verify" function that checks if the
patches were saved correctly by comparing the saved data to the CMOS.
No risks, especially if the recording is digital.
