CMI III 9.34 minimum boot spec

CMI III 9.34 minimum boot spec

2010-06-28 by arroncx

OK : so Ive now got video working, but every time I boot my CMI, I get different memory configurations reported, and different number of CMI 31 cards detected.

I am assuming there is something in the system casuing a problem on the backplane ?

Is there some sort of minimum config I can bring the system up under to identify the card(s) casung the issues ?

Can a series III boot with just a one memory board, one CMI-31 channel and no sampler card, and no midi board etc ?

If I have just one CMI31 card, should it be in the leftmost slot, or the rightmost slot ?

Cheers,

Arron

Hi Arron.

To hopefully answer your questions:

> Can a series III boot with just a one memory board, one CMI-31 channel and no sampler card, and no midi board etc ?

Yes. This is a good setup to begin with. Assuming it works like this, add cards until you get malfunctions...

> If I have just one CMI31 card, should it be in the leftmost slot, or the rightmost slot ?

It should be in the rightmost slot, next to the CMI32 or turbo-SCSI card. A second card would then be next to its left - you can't have any gaps. The memory cards can be in any position in the first 7 left slots, as their addresses are set with DIP switches.

Hope this helps...

Cheers Peter : thanks for the heads up : I eventually found that 1 of the CMI 31 cards was causing the issue, and have now replaced it with a spare. The system now boots in a consistent way, but not right though to the directory screen.

I eventually get an mptask I/O timeout error, when the CMI command runs.

However this is further than I was before :)

Next issue is that I seem to have blown another fuse : this time the lowest of the power lights at the back of the CMI mainframe does not light up anymore : it is labeled Audio + 20v and +5 Digital.

I suspect that the fuse is in the bottom of the CMI somewhere : do I just need to summon superhuman strength and turn the mainframe upside down and start removing the screws at the bottom ?

Cheers,

Arron

Hi Arron.

To replace the analogue supply fuses in a "standard" series III, you do indeed need to remove the bottom cover. Just turn the machine upside down and remove the 10 x screws, underneath you'll find the (from memory) CMI-310 board which as a row of fuses, all labelled. This is also a good time to clean the air filters in the base..

What do you mean "superhuman" strength to turn the machine upside down ??? I have to carry CMIs up three flights of stairs on my own, to get them in my workroom !!

Thanks for the advice again Peter :)

I was of course just being lazy : normally I would carry the CMI in a shoulder bag on the bus to go to gigs, with the Music Keyboard under my arm. ROFLMAO.

You must be made of sturdier material than myself. :)

Best : Arron
