FW: [Doepfer_a100] a New month of modular patching ideas...

2010-11-09 by Ian Campbell

hi list,

i've been building up a modular over the last few months, to supplement my collection of analogue synths. the modular is based around cwejman and doepfer modules, and i play it via a maq16/3 and/or system 100 (101) synth. i have just taken delivery of this months modules. they are...
a116 - waveform processor
a136 - distortion/waveshaper
a160/161 - clock divider/sequencer.

any patching ideas/tricks from the group?

also, i have a macbeth m3x which i love. it uses cv and s-trig via ¼ inch jacks. what is the easiest way to link this up to the modular? i'd like to trigger it from the modular, and process the results back through the modular.

thanks for your help.

hi Ian,

regarding the a136, a116, use them before the filter module, after the osc's (pretty obvious i know).
also using waveforms with few harmonics (sine, tri) will reveal more details about how the a136 and a116 add to the original sound. but the a136 is especially good on drums (and full drumloops) too!

regarding the a100controlling the M3x, you have to use the A165 trigger modifier module to convert from the doepfer trigger/gate to the s-trigger that the macbeth m3x wants to see.,

best regards,
Bakis.

i recommend to use a filter or a vca/mixer/attenuator
in front of the a136 (especially when the filter lowers
the amplitude of the signal). the a136 is very sensitive and
has no attenuator at the signal input. if your input signal
is too hot (like an unattenuated mix of vco waves) you
will probably just get square waves out of the a136.
not that this would sound bad, but it will not show the
real capabilities of the a136. modulating the signal amplitude
before the a136 can be more interesting than modulating the
settings of the a136 itself. two filters are even better,
one before and one after the a136.
by the way, the cv inputs of the a136 also don't have
attenuators (the corresponding knobs are disabled when
a plug in inserted into the cv inputs), so an external
attenuator is the best friend of the a136.

best wishes

yes, a vca before the a136 helps a lot indeed.
a dynamic signal fed into the a136 in general
gives best results.

thanks for the pointers, ingo.

my first couple of plays on the a136 were a bit disappointing. sounds like i need to control the signal a bit more before it goes into this module to get the best results.

regards,
