What are your opinion on this Epson WorkForce 1100 printer (A3+ size)? http://www.epson.com/cgi-bin/Store/consumer/consDetail.jsp?BV_SessionID=@@@@1274705544.1263917962@@@@&BV_EngineID=ccfjadejgllkelmcgemcfjgdfljdfon.0&cookies=no&infoType=Specs&oid=63084675&category=Products It using only 4 inkset cartridges, I thought this might be a good custom Eboni/Carbon 4 B&W printer.

you should be able to get a 1400 for about same money - and its got 6 carts and 1.5pl drops - most people use this if they are going cheap - or 1900 if spending a bit more. Compared with lifetime paper and ink costs, printers are dirt cheap, so personally I'd go for a 1900 and get 8 carts and better build. I don't have experience with the 1100 or any of the 4-ink printers, but I'd also say you should look very closely at the 1400. 6-ink and 1.5 pL drops makes it an amazing B&W printer (compared with the 3 pL drops of the 1100). $189 with free shipping from Amazon makes it not much more than the 1100 at $129. Keep in mind, a box of quality 13x19 paper is going to be $80 minimum! Because of the small drop size the 1400 can do amazingly good prints with just 100% Eboni (no dilutions) or very smooth prints with just one additional dilution. This makes either buying or mixing dilutions easy as you don't have to do so many. You do probably want to use QTR instead of the epson driver for these approaches. On the other hand if you really only want to do a C4 approach the 1100 would be fine - as long as it can handle thicker papers. The 1400 has a track record of being able to handle fine art papers when fed carefully, I'm not sure anyone has experience with the 1100 yet. Paul Roark has lots of info on workflows for 1.5 pL printers and I believe is currently using a few 1400's. Ken

I just got my 1400 and my MIS eboni-6 inks are coming in a couple days so no direct experience yet, however I chose this route after reading a number of threads and asking both Paul and Clayton directly on their thoughts. If the 1400 was $500 and the 1100 $129 then it might be worth considering but for less than $100 difference? On picoliter size along it's a no-brainer I think.... -- Richard S. I think it actually has 5 carts -- 2 black inks. The dual black is used for fast printing. I'm not sure there is a way to use the 2 spots for photo purposes. I like the C88+ for super-simple B&W - the "EZ" approach. This uses just a single dilute ink and Eboni. It works amazingly well. I buy these for my college kids along with a SuperJetUSA CIS, and the system last all year with no need for refills or maintenance. If there was a CIS for the WorkForce 1100, it might be the easiest 13" printer to maintain. Paul www.PaulRoark.com

No need QTR, just a simple B&W workflow... etc. I was told that there is third party refillable cartridges for this printer. Thanks guys for the opinion. John

It looks like the WorkForce 1100 uses the same carts as the WorkForce 40, which is widely supported. Paul www.PaulRoark.com
