Digital BW, The Print

applied Paul Roark's UT2-EEM different curves to adobe RGB 98
workspace print with predominate sepia (or brown) tone.  Coolest I can
get is light, light cream on a white  backdrop image.  Can't attain
any silver or even blue tones.  I tried not using curves, but changing
color sliders for CMY too, same result.  

Black is eboni, standard T009 UT2 inkset, cleaned heads, printed about
20 images so far.  After applying curves, printing with all color
settings off, same adobe 98 rgb workspace. Tried different paper
settings (matte heavyweight, and others), even printed on Canon Photo
Paper Pro just to see...same tone.

Seems it is the inkset, not the paper or settings?

Use the test strips at http://home1.gte.net/res09aij/Test-files.htm to check
the inkset.

 

Be sure you're starting with a grayscale file in Gray Gamma 2.2 workspace.
Sometimes there are embedded profiles that can mess things up.  When you're
ready to print, then convert to RGB, apply the curve, check the driver
settings, etc.

It appears you are as dedicated to the board as I hope to be some day!

Thanks for the tip.  I've started with both BW and color files in all
sorts of profiles (sRGB IEC...mostly).  I converted both to adobe rgb
98 with gamma 2.2 before applying curve, then printing.  No color
corrections in printing, so no gamma to pick in printing.

When I start with other files, they are usually in rgb and I have to
convert to BW.  I've done this mainly by image>adjustments>color
mixer>monochrome + % R, G or B.  Is this correct?  I don't add any
Hue/saturation at this point.

My BO printing was very neutral, and easily cool.  I added the other 5
cartridge UT2 inks and can't get rid of sepia...that's why I thought
it was just a matter of purging ink from the system.  But after some
head cleans and 30 pics?

"To see if the inkset in your printer has the correct inks, download the UT2
or UT7 files. Print the color original file as a color image with no curves
or profiles on Epson Enhanced Matte paper (sold as "Archival Matte" outside
the U.S.). Then compare the prints you get with the scans of prints that I
have made. 

"Note that my scanners colors and densities may differ. So, don't expect an
exact match. 

"The scanned images have on then what settings were used. 

"It is a good practice to print a purge pattern to keep track of the colors
of the inks in your inkset. As you buy new cartridges, you will then have a
frame of referrence should it appear that the inks may have changed. 

"You can just click on these file names, and they should appear on your
monitor. They right click on the image and "Save Picture As...""

The Cyan (C) prints lighter with lines in it than yours.  Print head
alignment?  Others are good (K, M, Y, LC, LM)

Let me clarify...

without color controls, cyan prints with lines, and lighter gray than
it should be.

with color controls it prints perfectly compared to your cc.jpg on my
monitor.

So is it my workflow?

I'm assuming your nozzle checks are perfect.

What sometimes happens is the 1280 screens in the head are partially
clogged.  They'll allow enough ink through for the lighter Color Controls to
look OK, but they cannot handle to full-on "No Color Adjustment" printing.

In this case, a cart full of Windex to try to clean the screens might be the
best remedy. I would not leave the Windex (with ammonia) for very long --
maybe half a day and see what happens.
