Answer on archiving to DVD . . .

Answer on archiving to DVD . . .

2006-03-17 by wwodets

Thanks for the responses on this question.

I have only spent a few days converting CDs to DVDs, so aging of the
DVDs was not the issue. I have used the Sonic and Nero Burn softwares
and am using a Phillips (IDE?) DVD recorder. I never use labels or
marking pens on the discs. The problem now seems tracable to the discs
I was using, the Delkin "Efilm Archival Gold" DVDs sold by Light
Impressions. These have produced about a 75% data corruption (and,
unfortunately only record at 4X speed). Tests with some Sony DVDs,
recording at 16X have produced no errors. So, I guess it's only my
silver anniversary. I'd stay far away from the Delkin discs.

Thanks,
Walt

More than likely your Phillips burner doesn't a have a writing strategy in firmware for the
Delkin disk and chooses the wrong one and/or the disks are defective or not high quality.
Stay with major brands but even that is not a guarantee. Memorex is currently selling 16x
disks that are not reliable.

With that said there's a whole sub-culture of users searching for the perfect burn: http://

Here's the Phillips forum for you Walt: http://club.cdfreaks.com/forumdisplay.php?f=92

Their quest is to find a burner and media combo to produce a disc with the fewest errors.
Also firmware and software is available – official and not - to improve burn quality. I'd
recommend everyone who is interested in preserving their images to head over and read.

Move to quarantaine

This moves the raw source file on disk only. The archive index is not changed automatically, so you still need to run a manual refresh afterward.
