Epson r1800 replaces 1280?

Epson r1800 replaces 1280?

2006-01-12 by Mark Drury

Hi,
I'm new to digital B&W and am looking to buy a 13" width printer. Since the
1270/1280/1290 Epsons seems to be gone (except used, of course) I'm wondering if the
R1800 is the next best thing in 13". Is there an advantage to either the 2200 or 2400 over
the R1800 for B&W?

Also, if I start with the R220 MIS CFS system, can I simply install these same carts in the
R1800 when I move up?

Many thanks,
Mark

If you can, don't buy anything other than the 2400.

I don't know if you have craigslist in your area but I bought a used
1280 for $30 and they regularly go for <$150.

Eddie,
That¹s a really great tip on the 1280. I had assumed that because I didn¹t
see it on retailers shelves that it was over and done with. I should have
researched it a bit more.

Thanks,
Mark

Yes, I have seen these on Craig¹s list occasionally but I was hesitant to
buy what I thought was a printer that had seen better days. Having read the
responses to my post, I realize I¹m definitely misinformed.

Thanks for your help.

Mark

Steve,
Would really like to hear why the 2400 is the one to get. It¹s definitely
more expensive.

Thanks,
Mark

Re: [Digital BW] Re: Epson r1800 replaces 1280?

2006-01-13 by Steve Kale

Yes it is more expensive. The list of reasons as to why it's worth it over
the 1280 is likely quite long but to highlight a couple of key reasons:

1. The B&W out of the box with Epson Adv B&W is really very good and likely
to satisfy 90% of people.
2. It's ease of use is simply sublime.
3. It's colour output is superb also. So B&W and colour, easily done with
the same ink set.
4. It will undoubtedly, mechanically and driver-wise, serve as a better
platform for moving beyond the OEM solution should you desire more.

Only you can assess the economics of your own situation but I'd think
carefully as to whether another older printer was being penny wise and pound
foolish.

Mark;

I own an 1800, and I'm with Steve Kale on this one: save your money
and buy the 2400. I bought this one because I want that small
droplet size to make digital internegs. So far I've owned or tested
4 of them, and all of them have had so much banding in so many
channels as to make them useless for neg printing, and barely
acceptable for B&W or high quality color. I've also been through 4
1280s and I wouldn't run pigments through one of those now if you
paid me, they were too much trouble to keep clean and running well.
If you can't afford the 2400 and must go used or refurbed, buy a
refurbed 2200, that's a very solid machine built to higher standards
than either of the above. And the MIS Pro version of the inks will
give you bronzing-free color, and Black-only or with QTR 2k B&W at a
reasonable entry price point.

Hmmmm....I have an 1800 and have had zero banding problems with
either color or B&W. Strange........

Ginny;

If you really have one that has no banding, you're very lucky;
Keep it and treat it well, talk to it nicely, give it all major
holidays off...
My R1800s didn't show banding with all inks firing and the Epson
driver. It starts to show when you use a RIP like QTR to run selective
channels, where the ink overlay isn't heavy enough to hide the banding.
