Dan Culbertson

Danny Culbertson passed away today, as near as I can tell from facebook posts. Dan was an early experimenter with the first quad tone inks available when few could figure out how to print with them. All of my early knowledge and craft accumulation is due to his work, generous sharing, intelligence and relentless curiosity. I'm quite certain many were watching his posts and his presence is felt not only in the nature of the products we use, but the non OEM culture represented here and elsewhere.
Since he worked for NASA I liked to say I was perfecting my craft with the help of a rocket scientist. We shared a lot of work back and forth including sending prints between us. Mastering dots of ink on paper feels pretty silly in the face of larger life and death issues, but the humor, intelligence, relentless pursuit of perfection, and generosity he expressed in these efforts help define a wonderful man. I just wanted to note his passing here.

Culbertson was clearly one of the early pioneers in the field. I'm sorry
to hear the news. Thanks for passing on the information.

But maybe it's the things we do that make life worth living and have
lasting impact. On my web page I've adopted the saying, "Vita brevis, Ars
longa" (Life is short, Art is long). (I flipped it from the original.
 See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ars_longa,_vita_brevis )

Not the same but my motto is "We grow too soon dead and too late smart!"

Oh bummer man! He was such a generous guy with his knowledge and just a good all around guy! My condolences to all his family and friends. He'll be missed on all the corners of this world.

Sad news.

He did join some mailing lists again two years ago and I had to explain
much younger members there what his contribution had been in the past.
Some of that can still be found in the archives of the Leben list
(Spinics) going back to 1998 (about the time I joined then) but he
started writing on the subject even earlier which can not be traced
back. The 12 inks systems on today's wide formats were already
discussed, the first custom quad ink sets already used. A nice guy to
discuss B&W printing with. It should not end with nostalgia, he looked
forward then and that was probably the best lesson learned.

My respects to Dan as well. I remember him as the visionary and innovator and gentleman that he was, working with a new technology the rest of us were only just becoming aware of, and generously sharing his discoveries.

So sorry to hear the news. Got this news from him January 25th. The eternal "optimist".

"Real nice down here John. (meaning Gainsville, FL) But I'm unfortunately all tied up in hospice so I'm not really enjoying it as well I should. Fortunately this is just a temporary set-back after they ripped out my L5 vertebrae to replace it with a couple titanium rods and screws and a stack of bone chips. Once it all grows back together I should be free to do light duty stuff - like art and light camera work rather than heavy gardening. Certainly no yoga here!!

Danny"
