John- Do you mean print on demand; like Blurb or Lulu? If so, try A & I Imaging in Hollywood, or Edition One in San Francisco. Bill K.

Last I checked none of the main ones like blurb for example do b&w at nearly the level of quality I would called acceptable. Hi Richard: Apart from inkjet, not much will match 175-200 linescreen printing using duotone or quadtone inks on a high end press. There's also http://asukabook.com/ but costs are considerably higher per book compared with blurb. I believe all are printed on an offset press, but not with duotone/quad inks. For short run, the quality of Blurb's black and white can be excellent. The cost is not high to run a test, which is the best way to know whether the quality is acceptable to you. The more I think about it, if you make prints that you like the look of, and a paper you like, it's not a bad idea to print the pages on inkjet and have a custom bookbinder do the rest. Of course, there are a number of reasons why someone might not want to go in this direction- time and cost come to mind. Just one more comment on Blurb b/w. I have found that they have gotten much better and more consistent. If you "Tone" your b/w images then you are more likely to get a better b/w. As they are now more consistent you should also consider doing a test book with some test targets etc. You can then soft/hard profile as you like. It may be time to do another "test" book. My last test books of B&W from blurb, lulu, and one other I forget the name of, was simply awful. Greenies, random white spots, and really poor tonality. All- The problems associated with many internet based POD (print on demand) venders has less to do with the technology used to print, and much more to do with quality control and adequate color management. Blurb, for example, uses inkjet HP Indigo presses that are capable of very good print quality, and they provide a generic ICC profile that can be downloaded and used for generic soft proofing. The problems is implementation. Quality control. Blurb, like most other POD vendors, aggressively markets to the professional but manufactures to the consumer. Still, it is simply remarkable that you can actually print real books on demand. There are solutions. One is to locate a boutique POD vendor. Another is to take more control over the process. I can highly recommend Chris Dickie's "How To Make and Publish a Photobook" to anyone wanting a better understanding the processl: http://www.picture-box.com/photobook1.html Bill Kennedy K2 Press, Inc. Have you seen or tried anything recently David? Reason I ask is last time I tried it was because a number of people were saying the quality for B&W was not so bad from lulu and blurb. Ugh. I’ll be attending a Blurb workshop given by John Paul Caponigro this coming Thursday, April 29, where I hope to learn as much as I can about getting the best possible B&W reproduction. If I do learn anything helpful I’ll pass it on. Those of you in the New York area might be interested in attending. Info at http://blurbnycworkshop.eventbrite.com/ There is a fee for the workshop but after it there will be a free “meet up” at the Red Sky http://www.redskynyc.com/ where Blurb users can get together and maybe pick each others brains. Yes, I have had several all black and white books printed, and they were pretty neutral. I thought they did a pretty good job. Did it look like b & w gravure printing , no, but it was good, no green or magenta casts. David -- David Aschkenas 915 N. I guess you can order the book from Blurb. I did not have it printed for the sole purpose of selling it. I had it printed so I could use it to show galleries instead of lugging a large portfolio around. Let me add to this: I have had tremendous support from MyPublisher. I drove them crazy trying to get my book out. Finally, I was successful and I was delighted with the product. Craig ________________________________

I thought this got posted but maybe not. It's been covered but I have used both blurb and lulu. lulu did a horrible job on print quality and the cover was an extremely glossy laminated stock that looked tacky, in my opinion. The 8.5 square format was also a bit too large for my work. I was also not crazy with their limited layout palette. I had to create the full pages in PS before importing them. Lastly, you have no way to edit the title page...at all. So if you choose a font for the cover and text pages inside, you are stuck with only one font on the title page. Blurb has a great layout program which is downloadable so you can work offline. You can size your images more accordingly and they tell you what the optimum size is. Their print and paper quality is decent but sometimes inconsistent. Still, for the price, you can't beat it and I love the 7 x 7 format. Thank you, John for your link to the reviews as well. I didn't know about some of the companies out there and it looks as though blurb is the best pick for me. I am in the processing of re-doing the current book I have up for sale but if anyone is interested in the one there now, the link is http://www.blurb.com/books/1134152 My 2 cents.... I think Lulu gives you several options for the cover design. You *can* do the entire cover design yourself, but you have to choose that option, and provide the right sorts of files (PDF is best, done in Adobe InDesign). But I've done it several times with success. Here are links to a few books I've done with Lulu to demonstrate: http://www.lulu.com/product/paperback/convento-art-emerging-from-ruins-%28exhibition-catalog%29/4576181 http://www.lulu.com/product/paperback/automatic-vaudeville/4017579 http://www.lulu.com/product/paperback/ex-cuba-libris/2082612 However, I do agree about the problems with Lulu's output. While I've had good luck with more graphic books (with art from paintings, etc.), the photographic output, especially monochrome, has been depressingly bad. --John

So, who has a downloadable offline program that works in Linux? Anyone? Or, better stated, who has a decent enough web interface that they don't *need* an offline program, as much as I would rather use one? Andrew
