Epson ABW Ink Usage

Epson ABW Ink Usage

2010-04-23 by shileshjani

Hello All,

Does anyone know the ink usage with ABW in a 4800 printer? Specifically, I would like to know if full strength C and M inks are used within +/- 20 points of the color wheel tint picker.

Thank you & regards.

Shilesh

I don't know. But generally there are even amounts of all color ink (slightly less yellow used) that go down during long extended (200+) printing sessions using ABW on the 4800. Color ink goes down 1/2 as fast as K ink. This is just my personal experience running labs. Don't know about how much during toning. I don't think "full strength" C or M is ever used in ABW whatever "full strength" means.

QTR primarily uses LK as the workhorse ink. MK second. LLK third. (depending upon your setup.) QTR probably uses 1/2 or less as much color ink as ABW.

Color inks are used even at dead neutral settings in AWB. Not a lot of
them, but they are used.

Walker and CD,

Thank you for your reply. I should have better defined 'full strength" C and M. I was trying to distinguish them from LC and LM inks. It is my understanding that C and M are not used for getting to correct tone; rather LC and LM are used (along with K, LK, LLK, and Y of course).

I just looked at a "warmish" ABW print under a stereomicroscope, and at low print densities, the dots of cyan and magenta were all very similar in density. But I was not able to see color quite as readily at high print densities. The reason for my asking is rather convoluted, but I am happy to elaborate if there is any interest.

Regards.

Shilesh

Hello Shilesh,

>Does anyone know the ink usage with ABW in a 4800 printer? Specifically, I would like to know if full strength C and M inks are used within +/- 20 points of the color wheel tint picker.

I think the answer is yes. I have tracked my 2400's ink usage from day one (about 4.75 years now) and here's the results in order of % usage (based on number of carts used). Most of the time I use a slightly warm of neutral tone with ABW settings such as (+2h,+8v). This chart shows some C and M use. I'm assuming that the 4800 usage will be similar to the 2400.

LLK...17.9%
LM....16.6%
LK....15.5%
LC....14.1%
MK....11.5%
C..... 8.9%
Y..... 8.9%
M..... 6.4%

Sub groups look like this:

3 K's = 44.9%
LC/LM = 30.7%
CMY = 24.2%

Regards,
Clayton

Thank you Clayton,

You're absolutely right. I must have not have been thinking, but the 48X0 class printer has LFP Remote Panel utility that gives the ink usage for each print job sent to the printer. And sure enough, both C and M inks have been used for some +10/+5 ABW setting prints I made recently.

Regards.

Re: Epson ABW Ink Usage

I looked at the LFP Remote Panel in more detail. Here is what I found:

Even when I use QTR to drive only K, LK, LLK, LC, and LM inks, the LFP records for those print jobs show that C and M were used in the 0.01 to 0.03 ml per letter sized page. In fact, when I print with QTR using just a single ink channel, all other inks are showing usage in the range I show above. So it is entirely possible that these inks are being fired away from the print surface, onto the waste pads. For what purpose? Keeping the nozzles clean?
