Monitor vs Print

2010-04-15 by M Prestie

Tyler,

Your statement regarding the value of a print floored me. I posted it
on my wall and sent it to friends who share my appreciation of printing.
The world has moved toward creating and viewing images digitally and you
have stated beautifully what is missing. The interaction between the
image, materials and processes create the print and it stands apart and
is a thing of beauty in itself. I hope printing will continue to be
appreciated and can co-exist with the new electronic only media.

Mike

When I go out on a shoot, people look at the back of the camera and nod, then lean over my shoulder in the evening, and say "oh, that's a good one" and I say "we'll see" and I delete half the images, and edit the best ones in Lightroom, then import the very best into Photoshop, and soft proof to a few media and tweak some more and people say "that's perfect" and I reply "maybe", and at the end of the trip they claim it was a huge success, and I remind them that we haven't made a single print yet: It ain't over 'til the fat lady sings.

I like that David.

I just came across this. . . . .

"It's not so much about finding your voice, it's about deciding what you want to say"

That makes sense artistically. The other perspective is that there is a great deal of craft and art involved in "finding you voice", when the print is your voice.

Terry.

and more graphic memory... most of Photoshops battles with the
computer are based on quick screen redraws.

Depends on what and how I'm shooting; I prefer to be in non-live mode, work through the viewfinder, focus manually, etc. But some types of work require live mode for video and related functions.

Re: Monitor vs Print

2010-04-17 by Jon

I almost never use the web/email/etc. when someone asks to see my work - not that I'm asked all that often. A monitor just doesn't do justice to the depth and range of tones (color & especially B&W) - not to mention that everything I do is geared toward the print as my final aim. I think I may have seemed a snob to a few, but a monitor just can't do justice when presenting a well executed print.

A color photo can appear much more brilliant/saturated & look great, but I always look to the print as the final medium of my presentation. Maybe I'm old fashioned or overly picky (or maybe I am just a snob), but just as a recording isn't the same a a symphony or a photo/4-color reproduction not the same as an original painting, a print is the only way to see a photo as it should be seen.

Unless, of course, one's medium is the monitor. Then such a viewing is appropriate.

My 2 cents (nothing more.)
