spam and cheese

spam and cheese

2003-07-29 by liberatusvirus

The depressing thing about this spam is that, unlike most other
forms of annoyance from people with infantile tendencies, it doesn't
just go away if you ignore it. Is it worthwhile for me to issue
Yahoo an ultimatum that they either let this group have a moderator,
or its 700+ members will leave to another host with a bad taste in
their mouths? Yahoo probably won't give a damn, but they need to
hear it (at least, we need to say it). I'm not for censorship, but I
am for choice and responsible policy. If Yahoo behaves as I predict,
maybe the "mass" migration should begin. Vern, OGD, and Steph can
probably work out the few remaining technical email and uploading
bugs. The Yahoo site will remain for the foreseeable future, and
interested stragglers can be redirected to DTXpressions.

At the risk of longwindedness, the other depressing fact is that
Roger's poll, like Stewart's before it, isn't getting a whole lot of
action. I've been the big stickler about loss of momentum and
personnel, given our (my?) ambition to intensity relations with
Yamaha. I hate to see even the empty numbers that it took four years
to build put in jeopardy; they do mean something. Stephen is right
that people will find the group if it leaves, though it will be a
little off the beaten path. The question is, Will the group come
back strong, and, if so, how long would it take? But the
deterioration of the group's integrity with unwanted messages and
the apparently thin participation may not justify a goal that is
increasingly looking like a pipe dream. So I ask again, Ultimatum to
Yahoo folowed by exodus? This plan needs a consensus of committed
regulars.

Ed....I say ISSUE THE ULTIMATUM!!! Wasn't Yahoo one
of the first who touted a spam block? And now all we
are getting hit with is porno spam...and check this
out...I am CONVINCED that Yahoo is selling our email
addresses to these scum sites. I have AD AWARE and
have removed ALL spy ware plus I have deleted all my
cookies, except my DTX cookie...and you should see my
mailbox-it's full of Viagara ads, porno ads and the
like...I am really disgusted, I have almost 100
filters on my email program...I am ready to dump the
PC and get a Mac-but I have so much $$ tied up in this
PC.
I am not worried about the DTX group interest yet...I
stated days ago that I think members are enjoying the
summer, and once fall and winter come-we all will be
forced inside, and will have time for our DTX. I am
also wondering WHAT THE HECK happened to Yamaha's new
DTX module that was supposed to come out Summer
NAMM...any word on that? Hope all is well with you
and the family.

Hi Jade,

On the new module, see my post #5431 of last Saturday. I'll be happy
to write the ultimatum if a few more members give their assent. On
the slim chance that Yahoo comes across, however, the incentive to
depart for Vern's house will dissipate, at least for a while. I
seriously doubt that anything we say will have any effect on Yahoo,
but that's no reason not to try. I just want to make sure that
people think that the attempt to salvage this site is even
worthwhile. As I said, my only incentive is to maintain momentum and
membership numbers.

Yahoo could are less. It costs them nothing when a group disappears
& frees up bandwidth.

Secondly, how about creating a group file that directs visitors to
the "new" site, telling them why the group chose to relocate, and
just set it so the file posts every week in perpetuity? If that's
not do-able by anyone except a moderator, somebody from the "new"
group could just post that info here once a week. Anybody that
checked in would see the "WE'VE MOVED" message.

My $.02.

They could care less - how? When the dead group is taking up valuable hard
drive space because the messages keep piling up and nobody's downloading from
it anymore (don't forget the spam still going to it).

You could do that, until there's the day when Yahoo, upon looking at quota
records, realizes that the group is taking up about 1/4 of the hard drive
space on their 500 GB RAIDed computer.

If at any point in time Yahoo decides to take a look at the group's
activity & content, and makes a determination that the group is just
idling, with no activity other than off-topic Spam, they can make a
command decision to just pull the group down.

They'll probably post a warning to all group members that beyond a
certain time, the group will no longer exist. IMHO, that'll be the
extent of their concern, if any.

Help!

I really enjoy the information this group provides...but I need to back out
of the group for a while. I have managed to remove myself from the yahoo group
but I continue to receive e-mail. How do I discontinue receiving your e-mail?

I'll be back

I just checked, Perry, and you're still shown as a member. Go to
where it says "Edit My Membership" and then click where it
says "Leave This Group?" If you've already done this, then it just
hasn't registered with Yahoo yet. When it does, the e-mail will cease.

Typically, only members receive e-mail from a group, so if you were
actually "unjoined" you wouldn't be getting mail from us. Hope this
helps.
