They could care less - how? When the dead group is taking up valuable hard 
drive space because the messages keep piling up and nobody's downloading from 
it anymore (don't forget the spam still going to it).

You could do that, until there's the day when Yahoo, upon looking at quota 
records, realizes that the group is taking up about 1/4 of the hard drive 
space on their 500 GB RAIDed computer.
