Spam and Member support

2003-07-25 by shetlandrocks

I am one of the "lurkers" in this group, I only post once in a blue
moon but avidly read the e-mails every day. I find the input of Ed,
Vernon,Stephen, Stuart,UNH, Jade and all the other regular
contributors useful, fascinating and entertaining. I am sure that
within the registered members, I am only one out of many hundreds who
use the group in this way.
The success of this group is solely down to those aforementioned
regular contributors who patiently reply to the questions of not so
well informed members such as myself.
I would certainly support any move to another site where the
disgusting spam was able to be blocked.
If there was any way that I and others like me could help please let
us know (it would make me feel less 'parasitical').
(Bye the way I'm another old "born-again-drummer" in my forties with
Rheumatoid Athritis in hands and fingers who finds the DTXpressII the
most brilliant piece of kit I have ever owned).
Regards
Duncan

Hey Duncan,

Thanks for chiming in. The issue of seasoned drummers with various
joint and tendon complaints is immensely important. I'm one of the
stricken, and a lot of other people are, too. Trick, tips, and even
plain old understanding about how to deal with the pain among our
lot are all welcome. The problem is common, too. Many pros go right
to the ice bucket after playing--Billy Cobham, Max Weinberg, etc.

It's amazing to me how many of us have things in common! :) I've had
three back surgeries and also am dealing with early-onset osteoarthritis
(knees and low back mostly). I'll be turning 40 this September (gasp!)
and I got the kit* to try and get "back into music" after playing
professionally (i.e. starving!) during my college years (actually, though
I *love* to play drums, in the bands I was in I was lead vocals, front
man, rhythm guitar).

Anyway.. based on this, the one piece of advice I can give out to all is
take Glucosamine/Chondroitin every day for joints! One I started with
this I got back a lot of mobility w/o pain. I combine this with VIOXX and
it gives me back the mobility that starts to degrade as pain trains your
body *not* to move in certain ways.

I also use the lightest sticks I can find and turn the triggers
sensitivity up. Then I crank up the volume on the module so hitting the
pads lightly gives me that "big boom sound" so I don't have to hit hard
and regret the stress in the morning... :)

Vern

*Actually my wife bought it for me so a) I would stop playing the Pearl
acoustic set that would wake the baby and b) I think she was tired of my
whining.... :D

I played drums from age 10-22, got married, sold my acoustics set. I
still have a cassette tape of a recording of 7-8 songs I did with a group of
other kids when I was 11 years old. Went through a second childhood between
30-33, bought two sets (first one used, second one new), started to get
really bad ringing in my ears and gave them up and sold them. In my mid
forties, going through a third childhood, was going to takeup skydiving, set
aside money and everything for it to....but....started to get bad pain in
neck, shoulder, tricep in left arm and fingers in left hand. Went to the
doctor,he told me I had two disc in the back of my neck that were pressing
against my spinal cord. I was out of work for 2-1/2 months from the pre/post
surgerical stuff. Doctor said, no skydiving, period, get over, take up some
with less stress on your neck. During the time I was at home on pain
killers, in a neck brace, I got bored and started surfing the net for drums.
Ran across the e-drums and bingo I was hooked and determined to get back
into drumming, low volume (solved ear ringing issues), low stress on the
neck, perfect. I still have numbness in the fingers of the left hand and
knuckle joint problems, but I here to stay in edrums, even if I have to
design and elastic band to hold the stick to my hand. I tried to play from
10pm-11;30pm every night and then it's off to a 30 minute hot shower for
loosening up all these old bones before bed.

After my last disk surgery, I lost most of the feeling in my right leg
fropm the knee down to the foot. :P Strangely, Fortunately, I have one
little spot right near the ball of my foot that I can still feel. Without
that It'd be very hard to be sure I was even on the kick pedal!

Unfortunately, that same little spot (where I can feel pressure ) feels
just like a pebble in my shoe when I walk! ::sigh:: Pretty annoying, but
I guess I'll get used to it. It's only been six months.... :)

Anyone remember the dueling-scars scene in Jaws with Richard
Dreyfuss and Robert Shaw comparing their war wounds? At times my
elbow and finger joints look like an air compresser pumped them up.
If only I could get it to work on my biceps.

Hello everyone:

I hadn't realized that some of you are dealing with physical disabilities and
injuries!! It makes me thankful that I haven't suffered these things so far.
As far as body maintenance goes, I stick with water and a vegetarian dietary.
