How To Hook Up MIDI Converter...TMC-6

How To Hook Up MIDI Converter...TMC-6

2003-01-31 by jadiebooshkie <jadiebooshkie@yahoo.com>

Just wondering if I got the Roland TMC-6...how would I hook it to
the DTXII brain...would MIDI OUT on the TMC-^ plug into the MIDI IN
on the DTX?...I am assuming it would run off or in conjunction with
the DTX module...is this so?

Jade,

You'd do it through a MIDI hookup. The first step would be to
transfer sounds from the DTX module to the TMC-6's individual inputs
(with the pads connected to them) via MIDI-in, probably by hitting
pads on your kit that have voices saved to particular user note
numbers, which the TMC-6 can store. From that point on, until you
change it, the TMC-6 uses each of those note numbers/inputs to
access your selected voice (or voices, if the input is stereo) in
the DTX via MIDI-out whenever the appropriate pad is hit. Once
you've programmed the sounds, you set up the triggering functions on
the TMC-6 (gain etc) to your liking. Voila, now you can play. The
TMC-6 functions like an intermediary, an electronic drum broker,
between the extra pads and the DTX module, which supplies the
sounds. Those are the nuts and bolts of a MIDI interface. The
details of how the TMC-6 accomplishes its job will have to be
between you and the manual.

So what you are saying is that the Trigger Edits that
say "Save to input x or y" will then be transferred to
each individual input on the TMC-6? Say I saved a
crash cymbal setting on the DTX to input 7...I would
then take the input 7(saved crash settings) and
transfer them to say input 3 on the Roland? Then I
could plug in an x-tra crash to input 3 on the
Roland...hit the crash pad(that is plugged into #3 on
the Roland) and those settings from the DTX #7 input
will be reproduced and transfered to #3 crash pad on
the Roland?////Sorry I SEEM SO DENSE...this is all NEW
stuff to me... and ..oh yah...I may have a KITI...see
my post earlier...heard from Rezdrums, if this doesn't
pan out I will probably go with the Roland....Jade

Hi Jade,

Although my experience is with a PM-16, not a TMC-6, I
suspect the theory is the same.

A trigger to Midi interface device converts a pad hit
to MIDI information, then sends it to another device
to process. On the PM-16 what I did was to assign a
MIDI note number (plus some other stuff) to each of
the pads directly attached to it. Then, on the DTX
you define a sound that is associated with each of the
MIDI note numbers you assigned on the PM-16. The
result was that you hit a pad attached to the
interface, the interface converts that to a MIDI note
number to be played, and sends that to the DTX module.
The DTX module determines what sound is assigned to
that MIDI note number, and sends it off to the tone
generator to play.

I expect that the TMC-6 works the same, although the
way you assign the MIDI info on it may be a little
different than the PM-16.

Oh Yah....I remember now!! I recall reading the post about the MIDI
note numbers when you voice edit on the DTX. I suspect I will need
ALOTTA HELP...bear with me guys!!...Thanx Walt....Jade
