Andromeda's sound characteristics

Andromeda's sound characteristics

2004-01-12 by Joshua Fuller

Hi all.. I am new to this list and considering
purchasing an Andromeda. I had a couple questions-

I currently own the following-

Waldorf XT
Waldorf Q
Nord Lead 3
Roland JP-8080
Roland MKS-70

My favorite hands down is the MKS-70, of course it's
the only analogue in the bunch..

But what I really love about it is it's ability to
create really warm, thick, smooth pads and strings..

So, I know the Andromeda is not the MKS-70, but my
question is- Does the Andromeda have the ability to
create these types of sounds?

All your feedback is very appreciated..

Josh

Hi Josh,
Andy is surely able to do these kind of sounds imho.
But if you need a synth just to do warm, thick, smooth pads and
strings....mmmmmmmm...I think you have to buy a cheaper synth, not a
monster like Andy...but if you really want a great sounding synth,
with a warm and powerful sound so buy andromeda.
Its not only for pads and analog style strings, its more...

Nice setup Josh!

My other synths (asided from the Andromeda) are The Waldorf Q,
Korg Triton & MS2000, Roland V-Synth & Doepfer A-100 Modular.

I used to own a Super JX (keyboard version of the MKS-70). Its
pads were super warm and smooth. Nothing else sounds like
that. The Andromeda is NOT as warm, but is FAR FAR more
flexible than the MKS-70. I would go so far as to say it's in the top
5 analog synths of all time...of course, that's all subjective (some
might argue that the Korg DW-6000 belongs in that elite group).

The Andromeda SUCKS for emulative sounds; that's what my
Triton is for. For everything else, it kicks lower intestine. It's truly
a dream machine & worth every penny I paid for it. The Rolls
Royce of analogs...pure luxury (albeit made in Taiwan).

To answer your question, the Andromeda will probably
disappoint you if you're trying to simulate the sweet spot of the
MKS-70...which is super sweet. Andy is DEEP...a modulation
matrix pops up for each knob you touch, so that the sound can
be incredibly strange & detailed. Think Matrix-12. I don't
remember the Matrix being that warm, either.

I suggest plugging in a quality set of headphones and spending
quality TIME with Andy before making the leap.

Hey hey there....I think the a6 is great for emulative sounsd. I
like using it for emulative sounds...and pads and strings...

it's pads can get amazing due to all the modulation
possibiltiies...very nice synth

:)

By emulative, I often think of piano, saxophone, guitar.....other
elements of a "band." Pads and strings aren't what I'd call true
"emulative" sounds.

The modulation matrix is too much fun. Some of the sounds I've
come up with have been truly interplanetary. Much giggling
ensued.

With the A6 you can create the richest and some of the most wonderful
strings around, but be warned that you will not get the smooth/silky texture
of the MKS70 with it...you get a "more american" sound to it, but in a much
more complex/alive/rich texture (Matrix12/Xpander way)- BE WARNED AGAIN that
this TAKES TIME with the A6 (time means months of getting to know it...do
not expect instant reward and feeling confident using it in the first/long
initial contacts)...I use synths since 82 and it took me almost 1 year to
get confortable with the A6...now getting in the 3rd year and I am always
learning new things...at least if I feel in an adventurer mood with the
A6...yes, it would be difficult to get any deeper in a poly analog format...

I decided to keep the MKS70 around because of that fundamental tone
difference and the "acidic nature" of its filter...not to say that you can
not get acidic with the A6, only in a "less round" tone, if this makes any
sense to you...

Do you know that part of the Q osc modeling was done "thinking" about the
MKS70 ones?...yes generaly it gets the opposite texture but you can get
close in some situations and with (a lot) of work....but nor the Q, nor the
A6 have the kind of almost total sweet spot you have with the MKS70...its
pretty much sweet spots all over with the 70 ;)

Hope this helps.
