Stoopid Newbie Troubles

Stoopid Newbie Troubles

2007-09-25 by schmaltzberger

Hi there,
Dave from Australia here, new to the an1x but loving fooling around
with it. I have been using software synths in Logic Pro for the last
couple of years and decided to take the plunge into a hardware synth.
This is where I get stoopid.
My problem is that I can't hear some of the voices (particularly bass
voices) on the an1x. Also when i intitialise a voice using "template
1,2,3,7 & 8 I can't hear the initial waveform to begin customising
the sound. I can hear the waveform fine on 4,5 and 6 "template".Well
I can hear it but only if I really crank the interface which also
produces a lot of noise.
I suspect this maybe where I am going wrong.. I have the an1x plugged
into a single channel on my tascam fw1804 interface. I have a stereo
out cable that goes from the synth to a single input to plug into my
interface. Can someone advise if this is in fact stoopid and if so
how to connect properly to my interface. Secondly could this explain
the apparent lack of volume on some voices and initialised waveforms?
Despite my stoopidity I am loving the sounds of this thing. Special
appreciation to the creator of the logic environments..now I just
need to work out how to use them.
thanks,
Dave

Hi Dave,

Have you tried cranking up the volume with the volumeknob on the AN1x?
Did you try the headphonesjack with a headphone connected, just to check
whether you get some sound?

Hmm, and usually you connect the 2 mono jacks (left and right out) to
corresponding inputs on a mixer, amplifier or whatever thingie that has
a left-right (white/red) line-in jack.

Usually you have to use a mono-jack to tulip cable, but well.

Anyways, try cranking up the volume on the AN1x first ^_^

It sounds as though you are using a Send/Return (Insert Cable) wired: TIP = Send, RING =
Return. These are often used as a "Y" to split stereo signal into Left and Right (Right =
RING and Left = TIP.) This type of cable is typically not used in the manner in which you
have it connected.

You need to connect the cable to the Left output of your AN1x and connect the Left
connection (TIP = Send) into your FW1804. Do not use the Right connection RING =
Return.) This will provide you a mono connection from your AN1x to your FW1804.

Alternately, you could connect the cable to the headphone out of your AN1x and run the
split outputs into two channels on your FW1804.

This should address your issue.

Hello Dave !
i think that your problems are there :

Yes, because both channels are not mixed properly . If you need only a
mono signal to plug in your sound card or mixer you must use the "L-
mono" output only with a mono cable . Don't plug anything in the other
line output (A.K.A. "Right"). Using a mono sound as this you cannot have
all the stereo based effect like dynamic panning. But it will sound
correctly . I've tried it in a guitar amp (mono, of course) and the
sound was OK. Not very good because the frequency range of a guitar is
narrower than a synthesizer and the guitar amps are designed
for....guitars. But it worked ; in fact it was to test the auxiliary
input of the amp...
Cheers
